The face of the note

First intended for another note

Clara Schumann lived from 1819 to 1896, a pianist and composer. In the background stand buildings of historic Leipzig, where she was born and celebrated her first great successes.

The 100 DM note was actually meant for Maria Sibylla Merian. Because it was difficult to find a suitable portrait of her, Clara Schumann appeared on the most widely used note, which was also one of the first of the series to be issued.

The back shows a concert grand piano and Dr. Hoch’s Konservatorium in Frankfurt, where she taught for many years. The piano has four pedals. It was not meant to be a particular instrument, but a grand piano of her time on which she could have played.

The Bundesbank also chose portraits as the main motif because human perception “responds particularly well to faces”. The back was new: it shows what the people on the front worked on.

The series

Eight notes, nine faces

On 1 October 1990 the Bundesbank issued the first two notes of the new series, the 100 and the 200 DM notes. By 27 October 1992 the other six had followed, last of all the 5, the 500 and the 1000 DM notes.

The series was designed by Reinhold Gerstetter, a graphic artist at the Bundesdruckerei. Historians drew up proposals from an initial 70 to 80 names; the condition was an authentic portrait to work from. Five models were mirrored so that all portraits look towards the centre of the note.

Some things stayed from the Bundesbank’s first series: the colours of the values, the large portraits looking towards the centre and the word “Banknote” in Fraktur.

The small format

The design of a note on 15 millimetres of gold

The 100 DM note measured 154 × 74 millimetres. The bar carries its design on a surface narrower than a 1-cent coin.

The paper note was work on the smallest scale. For a steel-engraved portrait, a good engraver needs “a good two to three months”, said the designer Reinhold Gerstetter. Experts from botanists to architects checked every detail, down to the exact number of windows in a building.

Some things on the paper notes could only be seen with a magnifying glass: on the right of the back lies a very fine background, with clefs and notes on the 100 DM note and with frogs and crowns on the 1000 DM note. The bar’s finish is proof.

100 Deutsche Mark Gold Minted Bar – Clara Schumann in Pure Fine Gold

One of the most popular German banknotes, captured forever in enduring fine gold: The 100 Deutsche Mark gold minted bar brings back the design of the legendary hundred-mark note – not on perishable paper, but in a precious metal that retains its shine for millennia.

  • Minting quality: Produced in the highest possible quality grade Proof (PP) – mirror-like depth, razor-sharp contours, flawless reliefs.
  • Fine gold as substance: 0.16 g of the purest gold with a fineness of 999.9/1000 – the actual reason for purchase and core of value.
  • Strictly limited: Worldwide mintage limited to 5,000 pieces.
  • Investment goal: With physical fine gold, you effectively protect your wealth against currency devaluation.
  • Value preservation: A proven store of value that preserves the real purchasing power of your savings across generations.
  • Protection: Especially in times of inflation, recession, and growing national debt, you can safeguard your wealth with real gold.
  • Design: Based on the 100-DM banknote featuring the portrait of Clara Schumann.
  • Manufacturer: Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: Germany; officially issued by the Republic of Liberia.

This gold bar combines a piece of German monetary history with the substance of a genuine precious metals investment. It is crafted as a so-called minted bar: a clean, rectangular bar shape with rounded corners, yet with the official character of a coin. The piece is issued by the Republic of Liberia and produced in Germany by Kettner Edelmetalle. As beautiful as the design may be – the focus remains on the gold it contains.

The Design: Clara Schumann and the Legendary Hundred-Mark Note

The obverse reproduces the front of the Deutsche Bundesbank's 100-DM banknote. At the center, the finely engraved portrait of pianist and composer Clara Schumann (1819–1896) gazes out at you – with an elegant hairband and teardrop-shaped earrings. Beside her, the large 100 stands as the face value, along with an artfully designed lyre symbol referencing her musical work. In the background, you can make out historic buildings from Leipzig, her birthplace. This is accompanied by the inscriptions "DEUTSCHE BUNDESBANK," the word "Banknote" in old German script, "HUNDERT DEUTSCHE MARK," and the serial number AA0000045A4 – exactly as on the original.

The reverse shows the counterpart of the banknote: a contemporary grand piano in front of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where Clara Schumann taught for many years. The image is complemented by the inscriptions "1/200 OZ," "25 DOLLARS," "REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA," and "9999 FINE GOLD." A detail for connoisseurs: the grand piano depicted on the historical banknote originally had four pedals – a lovingly debated detail that still makes the note unmistakable today.

Minted Bars: Bars with the Status of a Coin

Bars that bear a coin die stamp and an embossed face value are referred to as minted bars. In a sense, they are angular coins that appear at first glance like a classic bar. Through the embossed face value of 25 Dollars, this piece attains the status of a coin – and thus of official legal tender – in its country of issue, the Republic of Liberia. With compact dimensions of 15.00 mm x 8.50 mm, the handy minted bar sits well protected in its coin capsule.

Full-Fledged Investment Gold in a Small Denomination

Despite the nostalgic D-Mark design, what you are acquiring here is not a mere commemorative print, but full-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose value is primarily determined by the gold price. The design is the personal touch – the gold is the substance. Small denominations in particular are excellently suited for building up physical wealth step by step. Small amounts of gold accumulate over the years into a considerable holding that is tradable and liquid worldwide at any time.

Gold is considered humanity's oldest currency and, as a scarce commodity that cannot be arbitrarily multiplied, has outlasted all paper currencies. While central banks can print fiat money almost without limit, the supply of gold remains finite – a key reason for its long-term value stability. Physical gold is therefore a proven inflation hedge and a reliable crisis protection against political and economic uncertainties. Anyone who holds physical gold for longer than one year can, under current legislation, also realize a sales profit tax-free (minimum holding period of twelve months).

Give the gift of genuine investment gold – for example for a christening, birthday, or wedding. Instead of a fleeting present, you hand over a real asset made of pure fine gold.
