Some coins end up in a wallet. Others earn a place of honor. "Symbols of the Divine" clearly belongs to the latter category: with this 100 Euro gold issue, the Austrian Mint launches its new series "Myths, Treasures and Legends" on 14 October 2026. At its center are treasures from the Imperial Treasury in Vienna – objects that accompanied more than 600 years of Habsburg rule. Anyone who collects Austrian gold coins knows: a series launch is always a special moment, since experience shows that the very first piece is often the one missing later from many collections.

Relics, Legends and the Quest for the Holy Grail

The Habsburgs regarded their rule as willed by God. Visible proof of this was provided by relics believed in the Middle Ages to have come into contact with the blood of Christ. The coin unites three of these legendary pieces in the smallest of spaces – a small treasury to take home.

The value side: Lance, Cross and Agate Bowl

In the foreground rises the Holy Lance, created between the 8th and 14th centuries. At its center sits a pin long believed to be one of the nails used to crucify Christ. In the course of the 13th century it became known as the Lance of Longinus and from then on counted among the most distinguished imperial regalia. Behind it one can make out the simple crucifix created after 1350 as a container for the Fragment of the True Cross – splinters of wood said by tradition to come from the Cross of Christ. Deep in the background shimmers the 4th-century Agate Bowl. Carved together with its handles from a single block of stone, this masterpiece was revered for centuries as the Holy Grail. Around the edge run the inscriptions "100 EURO" and "REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH" as well as the year of issue 2026.

The design side: a key scene of the Christian faith

The other side depicts Christ crucified. The blood from his side wound is being caught in a bowl, while to the left stands the Roman soldier Longinus with his lance. Gothic ornamentation and a fine diamond pattern fill the background, evoking medieval goldsmith's art. The coin's design was created by Helmut Andexlinger, Rebecca Koini and Kathrin Kuntner of the engraving team at the Austrian Mint.

The Art of Minting, Perfected

It is precisely with such a delicate design that the Proof quality truly shows its strength. Polished dies, multiple striking of the blanks, careful individual inspection – the result is a mirror-smooth background against which the matted details stand out in relief. Folds of fabric. Wood grain. The fine braiding on the lance. To preserve this condition, the coin is delivered encapsulated in a case with slipcase and numbered certificate of authenticity.

Why This Issue Delights Collectors

  • Series debut: The first coin of a new series forms the foundation of every complete collection.
  • Very low mintage: Only 20,000 pieces are available to collectors worldwide.
  • Cultural heritage: All designs are based on real originals from the Imperial Treasury in Vienna.
  • Proven format: 1/2 ounce gold, 30 mm diameter and Au 986 – just like the popular predecessor series "Magic of Gold".

Collector's Coin or Bullion Coin? An Honest Comparison

Anyone looking purely for half an ounce of fine gold will reach for the Vienna Philharmonic. It offers a fineness of 999.9, a low premium and an unlimited mintage – ideal for pure stock-building. This is where the crucial difference lies. "Symbols of the Divine" contains the same 15.55 g of fine gold, but adds to it an elaborate design, top-tier Proof quality and a firm cap on the number minted. The higher issue price reflects exactly this added value. And it is this collector's aspect that has made limited gold issues from the Austrian Mint so sought-after for years. Incidentally, the Au 986 alloy also has a tradition of its own: it corresponds to the famous Austrian ducat gold and gives the surface a pleasant resistance to wear.

Gold: A Value That Endures for Millennia

For more than 6,000 years, gold has served as a store of value. Even in ancient Egypt it was a benchmark for trade, and kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power – a fitting arc back to the Habsburg treasures depicted on this coin. Gold is the oldest currency in the world, the big brother of its smaller sibling silver, and thanks to its intrinsic value has never once dropped to zero. Many collectors therefore appreciate that their passion also offers physical inflation hedge and a measure of personal crisis protection. There are also tangible advantages: the coin is exempt from VAT, and profits from its sale generally remain tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. As a family heirloom, it can also be passed down beautifully from generation to generation.

"Symbols of the Divine" combines masterful Austrian minting artistry with some of the most fascinating treasures of the House of Habsburg – a rarity that tells its own story in every collection.
