Since 1871, St George and the dragon have appeared on the Sovereigns of every monarch. The Perth Mint strikes it with a new St George and the portrait of Charles III.

1489 · Henry VII

A gold coin called Sovereign

In October 1489, Henry VII gave a new gold coin the name Sovereign. It was larger than anything England had issued before.

Under George III, the new Sovereign of 20 shillings replaced the guinea of 21 shillings. Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, created St George and the dragon for it; in 1821 George received a sword in place of the broken lance.

1855 to 1923 · Branch mints

The “chief coin of the world”

That is what the Sovereign was called in the 19th century; it was accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints: Sydney from 1855, Melbourne 1872, Perth 1899, Ottawa 1908, Bombay 1918 and Pretoria 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the South African Mint descend from these branch mints.

Perth · until 1931 and today

A new St George from Perth

Until 1931, Perth produced 106 million Sovereigns, each with Pistrucci’s St George.

Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new design: Jennifer McKenna draws an unclothed rider swinging his sword above the dragon. On the value side is Charles III, after Dan Thorne.

The Australian Sovereign measures 22.55 millimetres, with a face value of 25 Dollars. In 2024 it carries the mint mark P125, in 2026 a P and the number 100.

1536 and 1953 · The guardians

From Hampton Court to Westminster

On the bridge that Henry VIII had completed over the moat at Hampton Court in 1536 stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts. Following their example, James Woodford created ten beasts in plaster for the coronation on 2 June 1953.

At Kew, copies in Portland stone stand guard outside the Palm House; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.

"Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has outlasted all paper currencies. This limited Sovereign combines the intrinsic value of the precious metal with the rarity of a strictly limited collector's coin."

Technical Perfection Meets Historical Tradition

The Australian Sovereign 2025 impresses with its technical specifications:

  1. Fine weight of 7.32 grams of pure gold
  2. Traditional fineness of 916.67/1000 (22 carat)
  3. Classic diameter of 22.55 mm
  4. Face value of 25 Australian dollars
  5. Minting quality PP for perfect surface quality

These specifications follow the centuries-old tradition of Sovereign coins, which have been minted since 1489. With this limited special edition, the Perth Mint honours its own history – the Sovereign was, after all, the first coin in its permanent gold exhibition.

A Smart Investment in Uncertain Times

Gold has served as a stable store of value for over 6,000 years and offers protection as an inflation hedge. While paper money loses purchasing power, gold retains its intrinsic value. This collector's coin combines the advantages of the precious metal with the additional collector's value of a very low mintage.

The tax benefits speak for themselves: profits from the sale of gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. In addition, gold is exempt from VAT (Value Added Tax) – a decisive advantage over other tangible assets. As a crisis protection asset, the precious metal has proven itself over millennia.

Why Now Is the Right Time

Central banks worldwide – the largest gold holders of all – are continuously increasing their reserves. This demonstrates a lack of confidence in fiat currencies. With the Gold Australian Sovereign 2025, you are securing not only a piece of this eternal currency, but a rarity with extraordinary potential.

  • Perfect addition to any Sovereign collection
  • Ideal gift for special occasions
  • Long-term investment with collector's potential
  • Crisis-proof investment in physical gold
  • Part of a world-renowned coin series

The combination of strict limitation, the highest minting quality, and the timeless design makes this coin a must-have for every serious collector. With this issue, the Perth Mint has created a numismatic jewel that should not be missing from any high-quality collection. Secure your specimen of this extraordinary collector's coin now – with a mintage of only 1,500 pieces, swift action is required!
