Bavaria in Kilo Format: 80 Years of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria

On 1 December 1946, the people of Bavaria voted on their new constitution in a referendum, and it came into force one week later. Eighty years on, the Bavarian State Mint is honouring this anniversary with a special edition of its popular Bavaria Thaler, the so-called Bavaria-Thaler. The most impressive version is the 1 kg Silver Bavaria Thaler "Bavaria – 80 Years of the Constitution" 2026: a full kilogram of silver with a fineness of 999/1,000, 100 mm in diameter, minted in Munich. Few single pieces can make such a statement in a collection.

The Design: Patrona Bavaria with Lion and Constitutional Scroll

The obverse shows Bavaria, the patron saint of Bavaria. She wears a laurel wreath in her hair, holding a staff in one hand and an unrolled scroll inscribed "Bayerische Verfassung 1946–2026" (Bavarian Constitution 1946–2026) in the other. At her side stands the roaring Bavarian Lion. In the background rises a classical columned building with a pediment and frieze, above which is the face value "30 Bayern Thaler". The inscription "80 Jahre Verfassung des Freistaates Bayern" (80 Years of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria) and the years "1946 – 2026" frame the scene.

The design was chosen deliberately. According to the Bavarian State Mint, it is a direct homage to the historic double thaler of 1848, which King Maximilian II had minted to mark the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Almost 180 years later, this imagery has been reinterpreted, this time for the constitution of the Free State.

"It is the cornerstone of democracy in Bavaria and one of our most precious assets." – Bavaria's Minister of Finance and Regional Identity Albert Füracker on the Bavarian Constitution, at the presentation of the Bavaria Thaler on 8 September 2026

Reverse: The Great Coat of Arms of Bavaria

The reverse depicts the Great State Coat of Arms of the Free State. Two lions hold the shield, above which sits the People's Crown, and the heart shield displays the white-and-blue lozenges. Around it lie the heraldic fields for Old Bavaria, Franconia, Swabia, and the Palatinate. The inscription "Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt" (Bavarian State Mint) and the lettering "München" (Munich) indicate its origin. Clear, dignified, and unmistakable.

80 Pieces for 80 Years

The number is a statement in itself. The State Mint is issuing the special edition in seven versions, ranging from a one-ounce fine gold coin to a one-ounce fine silver proof. The two kilogram fine silver variants are each limited to exactly 80 pieces, one for each year of the constitution. This version depicts Bavaria in front of the columned building. Owning one of these pieces places you among a very select group.

A Minting Tradition since 1158

The Bavarian State Mint traces its roots back to 1158, when Henry the Lion granted Munich the right to mint coins. Today, it is one of only five mints in Germany and supplies central banks abroad with circulation, commemorative, and bullion coins. Since spring 2025, it has been minting the Bayern Thaler, a reinterpretation of the coin that served as legal tender in the Kingdom of Bavaria until the founding of the German Empire in 1871. The series became well known for its two designs featuring Neuschwanstein Castle. Now the special "Bavaria" edition follows, and demand is already strong: according to the Free State, over 80,000 Bayern Thalers had been sold by September 2026.

Why Silver? Five Strong Arguments

  • Preservation of value with history: Silver has served as a monetary metal and medium of exchange across many cultures for centuries. Unlike paper money, it carries intrinsic, physical value.
  • In demand across industry: Electronics, photovoltaics, and medical technology all rely on silver, and supply is limited.
  • Inflation hedge and crisis protection: As a tangible asset, silver has long been regarded as an inflation hedge and a form of crisis protection in politically and economically turbulent times.
  • Tax advantage: Under current German law, profits from the sale of physical silver are generally tax-free if at least one year has passed between purchase and sale.
  • A true heirloom: Silver is durable and retains its properties. A kilo thaler like this one can be passed down through generations.

Kilo Thaler, Silver Bar, or Ounce?

Those focused purely on metal weight will reach for the classic 1 kg silver bar or the regular 30 Bayern Thaler featuring the Neuschwanstein design. Both carry a lower premium. The Bavaria special edition plays in a different league. It combines one kilogram of fine silver with a historic anniversary, a strictly limited mintage, and provenance from a state mint. The higher premium reflects its rarity and design. The silver ounce from the same edition costs less and is easier to trade. But at 100 mm, the relief achieves a depth of detail that no smaller denomination can match.

Whether you collect Bavarian numismatics, love large-format coinage, or want to combine silver investment with history as an investor: this thaler is a rare opportunity. One kilogram of Bavaria, minted in silver and made to last for decades to come.
