The Royal Mint

25 Britannias in silver.

Coin tube, a stack of silver coins and a single Britannia beside it

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

200 times narrower than a hair

According to The Royal Mint, this is how narrow the indentations are that a picosecond laser makes for the waves.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 38.61 mm
  • face value 2 pounds

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

The Britannia – Symbol of Strength and Maritime Power

nn

When you look at the gleaming surface of these silver coins, you behold one of the most iconic figures in numismatics. The proud Britannia, in flowing robes and with a resolute gaze, holds her legendary trident firmly in her right hand. Her shield, adorned with the Union Jack, symbolises the unwavering protection of the nation. This powerful depiction has stood for the Britannia series since 1987 and has its roots in Roman times, when the conquerors first named the island
