The Royal Mint

One hundred Britannias in silver.

Coin tubes and stacks of silver coins, a single Britannia in front of them

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her in 1987 for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

100 coins

A tube from The Royal Mint holds 25 of these coins, and each row stands for one tube.

Since the 2021 issue

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure. To create them, a picosecond laser makes indentations which, according to The Royal Mint, are 200 times narrower than a human hair.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine silver.

  • fineness 999
  • 38.61 mm
  • face value 2 pounds

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

The Power of 100 Ounces of Fine Silver in Your Hands

Imagine: 3,110 grams of pure silver, divided into 100 individual coins of 31.1 grams each. This massive silver reserve offers you not only protection against inflation, but also maximum flexibility. While large bars are difficult to divide, here you can sell or gift individual ounces as needed. An invaluable advantage in uncertain times!

The practical coin tubes with their grey screw caps protect your treasures optimally. Each of the four transparent tubes holds 25 coins and enables space-saving, stackable storage. This keeps your investment not only valuable, but also in immaculate condition.

Britannia – Symbol of British Strength for Centuries

The breathtaking design shows Britannia in all her splendour. Draped in flowing robes, she stands dynamically, trident firmly in hand, ready to defend the nation. The Union Jack on her shield symbolises the unity of the kingdom. The fine radial line structure in the background gives the coin a special depth and makes counterfeiting virtually impossible.

"The Britannia series is among the most sought-after bullion coins in the world. Its combination of historical significance, the highest minting quality and pure silver content makes it the perfect choice for investors and collectors alike."

Why Invest in Silver Right Now?

Silver is currently experiencing a renaissance as an investment metal. Industrial demand is virtually exploding – particularly in electronics, solar technology and medical technology. At the same time, natural reserves are limited. This combination promises long-term value stability.

  1. Tax-free gains: After just one year of holding, your gains are completely tax-free
  2. Industrial demand: Silver is indispensable for future technologies
  3. Crisis currency: In turbulent times, physical silver proves itself as a safe haven
  4. Generational wealth: Perfectly suited for long-term wealth preservation

The Fourth Edition Under King Charles III

This 2026 edition is already the fourth issue of the Britannia series under the reign of King Charles III. His distinctive profile adorns the reverse of every coin – a piece of living history in your hands. The inscription "CHARLES III • D • G • REX • F • D" underscores the royal authority of this official bullion coin.

With a diameter of 38.60 mm and the characteristic milled edge, each individual coin sits perfectly in the hand. The face value of 2 GBP also makes it an official legal tender in the United Kingdom – even though the actual silver value far exceeds this.

Your Perfect Crisis Protection in Coin Form

In times of economic uncertainty, savvy investors seek stable values. Silver coins like the Britannia offer exactly that: an intrinsic value that exists independently of currency fluctuations. Unlike paper money, silver cannot be created at will. It retains its physical properties for eternity.

The high liquidity makes these coins particularly attractive. They are accepted by dealers and banks worldwide. In an emergency, you can quickly convert individual coins into cash – an invaluable advantage over large bars.

Tradition Meets State-of-the-Art Security

The Royal Mint looks back on a history of over 1,100 years. This experience is reflected in every single Britannia coin. State-of-the-art security features such as the radial background structure and precise micro-inscriptions protect against counterfeiting. You can be certain: your investment is genuine and valuable.

With this set of 100, you are securing not only an impressive silver investment, but also a piece of British history. The Britannia series has established itself over decades as one of the most stable and sought-after bullion coins. Become part of this success story!
