From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1997

    The Britannia in silver

Ten years after the gold Britannia comes the silver one, with 958 parts per thousand of silver until 2012. As early as 1697, England had prescribed exactly this fineness for silverware, which was hallmarked with a seated Britannia.

  4. 2013

    In fine silver

Since then, the silver Britannia has been struck in fine silver.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

1282 Trial of the Pyx

Since at least 1282, the coins of The Royal Mint have been tested independently. Today a jury at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London checks that weight and fineness are correct, according to The Royal Mint for the Britannia as well.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

The Many Benefits of Silver

Silver has long been known as a store of value and investment product. Profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year. The precious metal is in high demand in industry, particularly in electronics, solar technology and medical technology. Silver has limited availability and a limited supply, which leads to long-term price stability.

Silver as an Inflation Hedge and Crisis Protection

Silver serves as a medium of exchange, particularly in smaller transactions or in times of currency instability. It has a historical use as a monetary metal and is valued by collectors. In addition, silver offers portfolio diversification, as it can exhibit a lower correlation to other asset classes such as equities and bonds. It serves as a long-term retirement provision to pass wealth from generation to generation.

Many central banks hold silver as a reserve currency to support the stability of the financial system. It also serves as a hedge against inflation, as it rises in value when inflation increases. Unlike fiat money, which is supported by trust in governments and their ability to preserve value, silver has an intrinsic value due to its physical properties.

Historical and Aesthetic Significance

Silver has a long history as a monetary metal and has been regarded by various cultures as a symbol of wealth and prestige. It is used in jewellery making and has aesthetic properties that make it attractive to collectors. Silver is often more affordable compared to gold, making it an attractive option for private investors.

High Liquidity and Industrial Demand

Silver has high liquidity and can easily be converted into cash. Industrial demand for silver has increased due to new technologies and applications in many fields, which can lead to potentially rising demand. Silver has been used as a medium of trade in many cultures and civilisations for centuries, similar to gold.

Conclusion

The 1/10 oz Silver Britannia 2025 is not only a beautiful coin, but also a valuable investment. It offers numerous advantages, from tax exemption to inflation and crisis protection, as well as high liquidity and industrial demand. This coin is a perfect addition to any portfolio and a must-have for every collector and investor.
