The cycle

From industry, from jewellery and silverware, silver comes back.

In 2025 a great deal of silver came back from jewellery and silverware, writes the Silver Institute. Within industrial scrap, the amount from catalysts of the chemical industry rose, while the amount from electronic scrap fell.

Overall, recycling rose by 2 per cent, to its highest level in twelve years.

197.6million ounces of silver came from recycling worldwide in 2025, according to the Silver Institute, around 6,100 tonnes

Umicore describes the task of its refinery like this: giving precious metals a new life and putting them back into the cycle.

Electronic scrap and spent catalysts arrive here, as well as by-products of the non-ferrous metals industry and by-products from mining.

The way back

How this becomes pure silver

  1. The sampleEvery material gets its own sampling procedure. The sample and its analysis decide what is credited to the supplier.
  2. The molten bathOxygen-rich air and fuel flow into the molten bath through a submerged lance. Copper, lead and nickel act as collectors, taking up the precious metals.
  3. The separationThen the copper is leached out, and the precious metals remain in a residue. The refinery purifies it further, by classic cupellation and by processes of its own.
  4. Fine silverAt the end there is silver as granules of 99.99 per cent and in large trading bars of 25 kilograms.

Umicore writes that the metal in its bars comes mostly from this recovery, alongside other sources.

The refinery in Hoboken is on the LBMA’s Good Delivery List for gold and silver. Sales of the bars are run by Umicore Precious Metals Management in Hanau.

The bar

Cast, with a struck hallmark

The cast bar bears its maker’s symbol and name, fine silver 999, its weight and a number.

It is smaller at the bottom than at the top: Umicore gives the top surface as approx. 67 × 38 mm and the underside as approx. 62 × 33 mm.

Umicore – A Name That Stands for Quality

The Belgian precious metals producer Umicore is among the world's most respected manufacturers of investment silver. The LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) certification guarantees the highest quality standards and international recognition. When you hold this bar in your hands, you immediately sense its value: the characteristic cast structure with its slight irregularities gives each piece a unique authenticity.

"Silver is not just a precious metal – it is a piece of financial independence that you can hold in your hand."

The Markings in Detail

On the silvery, metallic shimmering surface of the bar, you will find all the important information clearly stamped: the manufacturer's name "Umicore" is displayed at the top, below it the designation "FINE SILVER" as well as the fineness indication "999". The weight of 500g is noted in the center. Particularly valuable for authentication: each bar carries an individual serial number at the bottom edge. The characteristic Umicore logo as a round emblem in the upper right corner completes the appearance.

Why This Bar Is Your Perfect Inflation Hedge

History teaches us an important lesson: while fiat currencies continuously lose purchasing power due to inflation, silver has preserved its value over centuries. The 500g bar represents an ideal denomination – large enough for substantial wealth accumulation, yet flexible enough for later partial sales.

Your Advantages at a Glance

  1. Tax advantage: After a holding period of at least one year, profits from the sale are generally tax-free
  2. Industrial demand: Silver is urgently needed in electronics, solar technology, and medicine – a factor that supports demand in the long term
  3. Limited availability: Natural deposits are finite, which contributes to value stability
  4. High liquidity: Silver bars from Umicore can be traded easily worldwide
  5. Physical ownership: Unlike digital forms of investment, you hold real value in your hands

Crisis Protection with Substance

Political upheavals, currency crises, economic turbulence – the world is full of uncertainties. Silver has weathered all these storms.
