The cycle

From industry, from jewellery and silverware, silver comes back.

In 2025 a great deal of silver came back from jewellery and silverware, writes the Silver Institute. Within industrial scrap, the amount from catalysts of the chemical industry rose, while the amount from electronic scrap fell.

Overall, recycling rose by 2 per cent, to its highest level in twelve years.

197.6million ounces of silver came from recycling worldwide in 2025, according to the Silver Institute, around 6,100 tonnes

Umicore describes the task of its refinery like this: giving precious metals a new life and putting them back into the cycle.

Electronic scrap and spent catalysts arrive here, as well as by-products of the non-ferrous metals industry and by-products from mining.

The way back

How this becomes pure silver

  1. The sampleEvery material gets its own sampling procedure. The sample and its analysis decide what is credited to the supplier.
  2. The molten bathOxygen-rich air and fuel flow into the molten bath through a submerged lance. Copper, lead and nickel act as collectors, taking up the precious metals.
  3. The separationThen the copper is leached out, and the precious metals remain in a residue. The refinery purifies it further, by classic cupellation and by processes of its own.
  4. Fine silverAt the end there is silver as granules of 99.99 per cent and in large trading bars of 25 kilograms.

Umicore writes that the metal in its bars comes mostly from this recovery, alongside other sources.

The refinery in Hoboken is on the LBMA’s Good Delivery List for gold and silver. Sales of the bars are run by Umicore Precious Metals Management in Hanau.

The bar

Cast, with a struck hallmark

The cast bar bears its maker’s symbol and name, fine silver 999, its weight and a number.

It is smaller at the bottom than at the top: Umicore gives the top surface as approx. 57 × 28 mm and the underside as approx. 53 × 24 mm.

Silver has outlasted every currency crisis in history – and will continue to do so in the future.

Craftsmanship Perfection from Belgium

What makes this bar so special? First of all, its origin. Umicore ranks among Europe's most esteemed precious metal refineries. The Belgian manufacturer stands for uncompromising quality and the highest purity standards. The characteristic spiral-shaped logo proudly adorns the obverse – a hallmark of quality recognized worldwide.

The cast surface gives the bar its distinctive character. Slight irregularities and gentle curves speak to the traditional manufacturing process. The matte, silver-metallic sheen catches the light in a way that fascinates collectors and investors alike. The rounded corners and edges underscore the high-quality craftsmanship.

Why 250 Grams Is the Ideal Denomination

This weight class strikes an optimal balance. Not too small to be impractical for transactions. Not too large to limit flexibility. The 250g bar is excellently suited for:

  1. The systematic buildup of a physical silver holding
  2. The diversification of existing precious metals portfolios
  3. Long-term inflation hedge for your savings
  4. Passing on wealth to future generations

"Silver is the poor man's gold – and yet so much more. Its industrial significance makes it an indispensable raw material of the modern world."

Industrial Demand Drives Value

Contrary to what many believe, silver is far more than just a precious metal for jewelry and coins. The electronics industry, solar technology, and medical technology consume enormous quantities of this versatile material year after year. This constant industrial demand forms a solid foundation for long-term performance. At the same time, supply remains limited – a combination that makes investors take notice.

Don't Forget the Tax Advantages

An important aspect for every investor: profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes physical silver a particularly attractive option for patient investors focused on long-term wealth preservation.

Perfect crisis protection in Uncertain Times

While paper money can be devalued through political decisions, silver retains its intrinsic value. It does not rust, does not decay, and cannot simply be "printed more of." In times of currency instability, it serves as a proven medium of exchange – a quality that has been valued for centuries.

The 250g silver bar from Umicore combines all these advantages in a convenient format. Sealed and marked with an individual serial number, you receive an investment product that meets the highest standards. Secure your share of this timeless store of value today!
