With the Gold Krugerrand "Willy Brandt 1990" 2026, one of the most unusual issues in the entire history of the South African classic has arrived. German motifs are an absolute exception on the Krugerrand – and it is precisely this fact that makes this collector's coin a true rarity. Only 250 pieces were minted worldwide, each one in the most noble quality grade of Proof. The mintage is firmly limited and will not be increased later.

The privy mark: a personality with history

At the heart of this special edition is a tiny additional strike. Above the Springbok, the digits "19" and "90" frame a portrait of Willy Brandt. Brandt, born in Lübeck in 1913 as Herbert Frahm, was Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1969 to 1974 and was honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. His name is linked to defining turning points in post-war German history – from the kneeling gesture in Warsaw to the events surrounding German reunification in 1990. A privy mark does not alter the established main design, but marks an otherwise unchanged coin as a distinct special edition – here as a reference to a historically significant personality.

Design: Paul Kruger and the Springbok

The obverse shows the portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1902, framed by the inscription "SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA". The coin owes its name to him and to the national currency valid since 1961, the Rand. The reverse bears the fleeing Springbok set against a typical South African semi-desert landscape – the country's national animal, designed by sculptor Coert Lourens Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" still appear in the design to this day. Over this familiar image now lies the fine privy mark.

Material, fineness and the highest minting quality

The Krugerrand is made of gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000. The remaining share is copper – giving the coin its unmistakable reddish-gold tone while also making it more durable than pure gold pieces. The 1/10 ounce denomination corresponds to 3.11 g of fine gold. In the elaborate Proof technique, the blanks are struck multiple times with polished dies; the result is deeply mirrored fields and a sculptural, matte relief that brings out every detail. The coin is produced by the South African Mint in cooperation with the renowned Rand Refinery and is delivered in a high-quality case together with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

  • Diameter: 16.50 mm
  • Year of issue: 2026
  • Mintage: 250 pieces worldwide

A collector's item for connoisseurs

This issue is aimed at everyone who values history, design and rarity above pure gram weight. While the classic bullion Krugerrand – as a one-ounce gold coin as well as in smaller denominations – is designed for robustness and quantity, and the young silver Krugerrand has complemented the series since 2017, the Proof edition specifically appeals to collectors who appreciate flawless surfaces and the utmost sharpness of detail. The extremely low mintage makes this piece a particularly sought-after collector's coin with noticeable appreciation potential within the popular gold coins category.

Gold is humanity's oldest currency – a store of value that has endured for millennia and has never lost its shine.

At the same time, the solid qualities of the precious metal remain intact: gold possesses an inherent, globally recognised value and is traditionally valued as an inflation hedge as well as crisis protection. The purchase of investment gold is VAT-free in Germany, and profits from its sale are generally tax-free provided the holding period is at least one year. Thus, the 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand "Willy Brandt 1990" combines the charm of a strictly limited rarity with the timeless permanence of the yellow metal – a piece to be preserved and passed down through generations.
