The kangaroo of the year

A design by Neil Hollis

Ripples and splashes around the kangaroos, as The Perth Mint describes the design.

The 40 in the design is a privy mark for the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget. The gold coin was approved on 8 August 1985, and its first issue appeared at the end of 1986.

The name

Why it is called Nugget

The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.

This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.

Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series

A new kangaroo every year

The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.

There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

This coin is far more than just one ounce of gold. It represents a piece of Australian history and culture. The two leaping kangaroos, masterfully struck in relief, tell the story of the fifth continent. The detailed depiction of water ripples and the artistic integration of the mintmark "40" underline the craftsmanship of the Perth Mint.

"Gold is the oldest currency in the world - it has outlived all paper currencies and will continue to do so."

With a diameter of 32.60 mm, the coin fits perfectly in the hand. Its Brilliant Uncirculated quality is permanently protected by the included coin capsule. As legal tender with a face value of 100 AUD, it enjoys special legal protection.

The Perth Mint - tradition meets innovation

Since 1899, the Perth Mint has stood for the highest minting quality. As one of the oldest still-active mints in the world, it combines traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology. Every Kangaroo Nugget undergoes strict quality controls before leaving the mint.

The fineness of 999.9/1,000 makes this coin one of the purest gold coins on the market. Compared to other popular bullion coins such as the Krugerrand (916.7/1,000) or the American Eagle (916.7/1,000), you receive almost pure gold here.
