The coin’s design

One year from the history of the series

With this issue, the year is not fixed at the time of purchase. The picture above shows one coin as an example; your coin may bear a different year, a different design and a different portrait.

The name

Why it is called Nugget

The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.

This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.

Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series

Many years, many designs

Since 1986 the series has borne many designs: first famous gold nuggets, since 1989 the kangaroo, on the bullion coins up to one ounce in a new design every year. In the first kangaroo years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.

There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

The finish

From various years

What stays the same in every year: The Perth Mint strikes these coins in gold with a fineness of 99.99 per cent, as legal tender in Australia.

The obverse also depends on the year: up to 2023 it shows Queen Elizabeth II, since 2024 King Charles III.

The Fascination of Gold

Gold has been a stable and proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, because it possesses intrinsic value. Gold protects you against loss of purchasing power and serves as crisis protection. Gold is the oldest currency in the world and is recognised as a currency worldwide. It is tradeable globally and can be used as a means of exchange. Gold is a scarce commodity with a limited supply, which leads to long-term value stability.
