The 40 in the design is a privy mark for the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget. The gold coin was approved on 8 August 1985, and its first issue appeared at the end of 1986.

The name
Why it is called Nugget
The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.
This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.
Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series
A new kangaroo every year
The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.
There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

The finish
High Relief in gold
For the High Relief, The Perth Mint strikes on an extra-thick blank so that the design stands in high relief. This makes the coin smaller and thicker than the bullion coin: at most 27.60 millimetres in diameter instead of 32.60, but up to 5 millimetres thick.
The obverse shows King Charles III in the portrait by Dan Thorne. The Perth Mint’s first coin with this portrait was a kangaroo coin, released on 15 January 2024.

40 Years of the Australian Nugget – An Anniversary Immortalized in Gold
With this year's minting, the Perth Mint celebrates a special chapter of Australian coin history: for four decades, the series has captivated collectors and investors around the globe. The anniversary design shows two kangaroos dynamically leaping through shallow water. In the background stretches a vast mountain landscape, while gentle water ripples bring the scene to life. The mint mark bearing the number "40" underscores the historical significance of this vintage. So much symbolism, so much movement – captured in 31.1 grams of pure gold.
Anyone familiar with the regular Gold Kangaroo Nugget editions knows their quality. But this special edition stands out in every respect. The High Relief technique gives the design a three-dimensional sculptural quality that simply cannot be achieved with conventional minting. Every detail – from the muscles of the leaping kangaroos to the fine wave structures in the water – emerges with a depth that truly captivates the viewer.
Proof: Perfection Down to the Smallest Detail
The Proof minting quality represents the ultimate in coin production. Mirror-smooth surfaces contrast with matte, velvety relief areas, creating that characteristic effect that connoisseurs recognize instantly. Each of these 200 coins undergoes an elaborate minting process, in which specially polished dies strike the pre-treated blank multiple times. The result? Flawless. Uncompromising. Breathtaking.

Why This Particular Coin? Because 200 Pieces Is Nothing.
Let that number sink in: Two hundred. Not twenty thousand, not two hundred thousand – just 200 pieces. Distributed among collectors, dealers, and institutional buyers worldwide. Experience shows that such strictly limited Perth Mint editions sell out within the shortest possible time. And what follows is the secondary market – with prices that impressively demonstrate the appreciation potential of such rarities.
"Gold is the money of kings. And a coin with a mintage of 200 pieces? That is the crown among gold coins."
Compared to the regular bullion editions of the Kangaroo series, which are minted in the millions, this special edition operates in a completely different league. While standard gold coins primarily serve as investment objects, the High Relief Proof edition combines the intrinsic value of gold with the numismatic added value of a genuine collector's rarity. Anyone interested in the sister series in another precious metal should also take a look at the Platinum Kangaroo Nugget editions – also from the Perth Mint and highly valued by collectors.
Perth Mint: A Name That Stands for Excellence
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is among the oldest and most renowned mints in the world. Its gold coins enjoy international acclaim – not only because of the material purity of 999.9 parts per thousand used, but also because of the craftsmanship precision found in every single minting. The numbered certificate of authenticity included with this edition guarantees authenticity and makes each specimen uniquely identifiable.
Who Is This Coin Made For?
Quite clearly: for the discerning collector. For those who don't simply want to own gold, but a piece of coin history. The combination of the anniversary design, High Relief minting, Proof quality, and a limitation to just 200 pieces makes this edition an object that should not be missing from any ambitious collection. Gold has preserved its value for over 6,000 years – and this coin carries this legacy forward with an elegance that has no equal.
Secure your specimen before the last pieces are gone. Because with such a low mintage, more than ever: those who hesitate, watch from the sidelines.
