The name
Why it is called Nugget
The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.
This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.
Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series
A new kangaroo every year
The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.
There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

What a piece of numismatic history! With the 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo Nugget 2026 in Proof quality, you don't simply hold a gold coin in your hands – you own a testament to four decades of Australian minting artistry. With this anniversary edition, the Perth Mint celebrates the 40th anniversary of one of the world's most popular gold coin series. And it does so in the most exclusive way imaginable: with a very low mintage of just 500 pieces worldwide.
A design that makes collectors' hearts beat faster
This year's design breaks with the tradition of featuring a single kangaroo and instead presents a fascinating scene: two kangaroos leap dynamically through shallow water, while gentle ripples and a distant mountain landscape stretch out in the background. The scene radiates an almost cinematic vastness – the quintessential Australian outback, captured in 999.9 fine gold on a diameter of just 16.60 mm. The small but significant "40" mint mark unmistakably refers to the anniversary, making this edition a historic milestone within the series.
Anyone seeking collector's coins with substance will find exactly that here. This rare collector's coin combines several factors that make it especially desirable to numismatists.
Why this particular edition is so special
The regular bullion editions of the Australian Kangaroo are issued annually in the millions. This Proof version, however? Just 500 pieces. That's a ratio worth savoring. While the bullion variant is primarily defined by the gold price, the Proof edition derives its value from its rarity, its flawless minting quality, and its emotional value to the collector.
"A coin in Proof quality is not merely an investment object – it is a work of art in precious metal that can gain in numismatic significance with every passing year."
- The strict limitation to 500 pieces ensures natural scarcity in the market.
- The anniversary design marking the series' 40th birthday will never be issued again in this form.
- The Proof minting quality guarantees the sharpest details and mirror-smooth surfaces – a visual experience in itself.
- The numbered certificate of authenticity in an elegant presentation case documents the authenticity of every single piece.
Fine gold in its purest form
With a fineness of 999.9/1000, this coin belongs to the absolute top tier among gold coins. The fine weight of 1/10 ounce (3.11 g) makes it a compact yet valuable collector's item – also ideal as an entry point into the world of limited Proof coins. The face value of 15 Australian dollars is purely symbolic; the actual material value, and above all the collector's value, naturally lies far above that.
The Perth Mint – a guarantee of world-class quality
The Perth Mint has been striking coins of unparalleled quality since 1899. It is one of the oldest and most respected mints in the world. Every single Proof coin undergoes strict quality controls before leaving the mint. Whoever owns a Perth Mint coin owns a piece of Australian craftsmanship.
By the way: For collectors looking to expand their portfolio with another precious metal, it's also worth taking a look at the Platinum Kangaroo Nugget editions – also produced by the Perth Mint and available in similarly exclusive mintages.
Who is this coin made for?
This anniversary edition is aimed at discerning collectors who seek something special. At people who understand that a mintage of just 500 pieces represents a true rarity in the world of numismatics. And at everyone who knows: not all gold is created equal. What matters is which gold you own. This coin tells a story – the story of 40 years of the Australian Nugget, captured in a single, perfectly minted piece of fine gold.
Secure your piece now, before this limited edition sells out. With only 500 pieces worldwide, experience shows this is only a matter of time.
