The name
Why it is called Nugget
The Welcome Stranger was found by the miner John Deason on 5 February 1869 near Moliagul in Victoria, three centimetres deep among the roots of a tree. He hid the find until dark and then dug it out with his partner Richard Oates. In Dunolly the nugget, then the largest known in the world, had to be broken up on an anvil so that it would fit on the bank’s scales, as Museums Victoria reports.
This nugget and three other famous ones appeared on the first years of the series, in designs by Stuart Devlin. It began as The Australian Nugget.
Then came the kangaroo, according to The Perth Mint an icon of Australia that is more easily recognised all over the world. Since 2008 it has listed the bullion coin as the Australian Kangaroo; we still call the series Kangaroo Nugget, after the name under which it began in 1986.

The series
A new kangaroo every year
The gold bullion coins up to one ounce receive a new kangaroo every year. In the early years even the species changed, from the red kangaroo in 1990 to the whiptail wallaby in 1994.
There had been a kangaroo on gold in Australia before. In 1853 Reginald Scaife reached Melbourne aboard the clipper Kangaroo, as manager of a private mint, the Kangaroo Office. With purpose-made dies he struck 27 sets of gold tokens, from a quarter ounce to two ounces, dated 1853.

What a masterpiece. The 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo Nugget 2026 in Proof is far more than an ordinary gold coin – it is a numismatic event. For the 40th anniversary of the Australian Nugget series, the Perth Mint has created an edition that is unparalleled in its beauty and rarity. With a mintage of only 500 pieces worldwide, this collector's coin is among the most sought-after gold coins of the 2026 vintage.
A design that captures the soul of Australia
The obverse of this coin tells a story. Designed by Neil Hollis – whose initials "NH" are discreetly immortalized next to the design – it shows two kangaroos in full motion. A fully grown animal in a powerful leap, next to it a smaller kangaroo following its example. Both are crossing a shallow body of water, where concentric rings and fine ripples form from the impact of their paws. In the background, the vast Australian outback landscape stretches out with gentle hills and distant mountains. Centered above the kangaroos is the number "40" within a circle – the proud symbol of the anniversary.
The curved inscription "KANGAROO" elegantly runs along the upper right edge, while on the left the details "2026 1/4oz 9999 GOLD" and the "P" mint mark of the Perth Mint can be found. The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III with the inscription "CHARLES III · AUSTRALIA" and the face value "25 DOLLARS".
Proof – perfection in gold
The Proof quality is the pinnacle of minting craftsmanship. Each individual piece is produced using specially polished dies on high-gloss polished blanks – struck multiple times to achieve the incomparable depth effect. The result? A flawlessly mirrored background from which the frosted, raised relief details emerge in striking fashion. The fur texture of the kangaroos, the fine water reflections, even the distant mountain range – all executed with a level of detail that is simply breathtaking. The reeded edge perfectly rounds off the overall appearance of this 20.60 mm small treasure.
Gold is the oldest currency in human history. It has survived every crisis, every war, and every inflation – without ever losing its value. This anniversary coin combines this timeless value with the art of numismatics.
Why this coin is so special for collectors
Let's talk numbers. 500 pieces. Worldwide. No more. In a world where millions of bullion coins leave the mints every year, such a limitation is extraordinary. The regular Kangaroo bullion coins are produced in far higher quantities – which makes this proof special edition all the more desirable. Experienced numismatists know: especially with anniversary editions bearing such a strictly limited mintage, demand can quickly outstrip supply.
Additionally: The Perth Mint's Kangaroo series enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide. Since 1986 – meaning for 40 years now – it has delighted collectors and investors alike. Whoever owns the anniversary edition in Proof holds a piece of coin history. And for those also interested in other precious metals from the series, it's worth taking a look at the Platinum Kangaroo Nugget editions – an equally fascinating addition to any collection.

Gold – VAT-free and tax-privileged
An advantage not to be underestimated: gold coins like this one are exempt from VAT in Germany. Furthermore, profits from the sale of gold are generally tax-free, provided the holding period is at least one year. This makes this rarity interesting not only for passionate collectors but also for forward-thinking investors who appreciate the intrinsic value of gold.
Gold has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero – and never will. While paper currencies come and go, gold remains constant. This 1/4 oz Kangaroo Nugget 2026 in Proof combines this timeless material value with the exclusivity of a strictly limited anniversary edition. A combination that unfolds its very own appeal in the world of numismatics.
Conclusion: A golden collector's piece with rarity value
The 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo Nugget 2026 in Proof is a coin for connoisseurs.
