Before the Vreneli came in 1897, the 20-franc piece showed Libertas. The case holds ten of her twelve years.

Where the year is

The date below the shield

On the Libertas the date stands at the bottom of the value side, below the shield with the Swiss cross, above which there is a star. The case holds ten different dates.

  • 1883The date 1883

  • 1896The date 1896

1883 to 1896

Before the Vreneli: the Libertas

The 20-franc pieces of 1883 to 1896, which the trade calls Helvetia, show a classical female head, Libertas, and no Vreneli.

Albert Walch created the model of the portrait side, Christian Bühler that of the value side, both in Bern; the engraving was done by Karl Schwenzer in Stuttgart. The diadem bears the word LIBERTAS, and CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA stands to the left and right of the head. The value side shows the Swiss cross in a shield, with a five-pointed star above it.

Swissmint counts twelve years of striking with 1,750,044 pieces in all; none were struck in 1884 and 1885. Your set contains ten of them. Missing are 1887 with 176 and 1888 with 4,224 pieces.

On the edge

First reeded, then lettered

On the Libertas the edge changed: until 1885 it was reeded, from 1886 it bore the raised legend DOMINUS / PROVIDEBIT. In your set, therefore, only the piece of 1883 has a reeded edge.

  • Libertas 1883 to 188521 mm, reeded

  • Libertas from 1886DOMINUS, three stars, PROVIDEBIT, ten stars

Drawn after the description by Swissmint, each edge unrolled. The lengths are in proportion to the diameters.

Model from Neuchâtel, dies from Paris

The Vreneli, which followed the Libertas in 1897, was made in three places: Fritz Landry created the model in Neuchâtel, the original dies came from Ernest Paulin Tasset in Paris, and it was struck in Bern.

A Treasure of Numismatics: The Complete Set 10x20 Swiss Francs Gold Helvetia

A touch of history, a shimmer of elegance, and the incomparable feeling of holding a piece of genuine tradition in your hands – that is what the exclusive complete set 10x20 Swiss Francs Gold Helvetia (1883-1896) offers you. This exquisite ensemble of gold is more than an investment; it is a journey through time and a tribute to the precision craftsmanship of the Swiss Federal Mint in Bern.

Historical Overview and Design

The design of the Helvetia coins is deeply rooted in Swiss culture. As the national personification of Switzerland, Helvetia represents freedom and independence. On the obverse of these coins, Helvetia is enthroned majestically, crowned with a diadem bearing the inscription "LIBERTAS", and surrounded by the inscription "CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA". The reverse is adorned with a five-pointed star above the Swiss cross, embedded in a simple coat of arms and surrounded by a wreath, the face value of 20 FR, and the year of issue.

Material, Fineness and Minting

Each of these 10 coins is made of 900 gold, giving them a special fineness and intrinsic value. The precious metal gold, known as God's money, has been a stable store of value for over 6,000 years and has never had a value of zero. The coins were minted with the utmost care and precision by the renowned Swiss Federal Mint in Bern, a manufacturer known for its quality and craftsmanship.

Rarity and Appreciation Potential

  • Including the rare years of issue 1889, 1891, and 1892, each with a mintage of only 100,000 pieces
  • 10 precious coins from the years 1883-1896, each a testament to its time
  • The Helvetia is the predecessor of the Swiss Vreneli, which was minted starting in 1897
  • All gold coins minted between 1897 and 1949 are now known and valued under the name Vreneli

This complete set is not only a collector's item but also an investment with high inflation hedge and appreciation potential. As such, it offers protection against loss of purchasing power and serves as a safeguard against inflation and currency risks.

Gold as an Investment and Store of Value

Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has been valued for thousands of years for its durability and brilliance. Profits from the sale of gold are tax-free in Germany after a holding period of at least one year, and since gold is exempt from VAT, it is excellently suited as an asset class. Central banks hold gold worldwide as a reserve currency, underscoring its importance and stability. In times of political and economic uncertainty, gold serves as a safe haven and reliable crisis protection.

The Significance of Gold in History

Gold was already used as currency in ancient Egypt and was an essential part of international trade along the Silk Road. It symbolized wealth and power and was a central element of the gold standard system. Gold has a low correlation to other asset classes and contributes to portfolio diversification. It is durable, globally tradable, and is used as a medium of exchange in times of currency instability.

Conclusion

The complete set 10x20 Swiss Francs Gold Helvetia (1883-1896) is an investment with history, culture, and incomparable charm. These gold coins are not only an enrichment for any collection but also a solid foundation for your portfolio. Let yourself be inspired by Swissmint and secure a piece of genuine Swiss precision craftsmanship.
