Chad 2024 · gold

Rosette and spot, two coats for two worlds.1/1,000 ounce,rosette by rosette.

African Leopard, 1/1,000 ounce gold
Leopard: rosettes
Cheetah, 1/1,000 ounce of gold
Cheetah: spots

The leopard’s coat suits its life in trees, in the forest and at night.

The leopard

From the desert to the rainforest

  • Desert
  • Mountain forest
  • Rainforest

No other big cat is as widespread: leopards live in some 62 countries across Africa and Eurasia, in deserts, savannas, mountains and rainforests.

They prefer rocky ground with dense bush and riverine forest. The leopard climbs well, spends much of its time in trees and is mostly active at night, as a loner.

Its coat carries dark, irregular spots, the rosettes; the base colour ranges from pale yellow in warm, dry regions to reddish orange in dense forests. Instead of purring, it calls with a rough, rasping sound.

The cheetah

The only one of its genus

Its genus, Acinonyx, has no other living member today. The cheetah needs wide, open land and is mostly active by day, unlike many other cats.

Its coat carries solid, round or oval black spots from 1.9 to 3.8 centimetres; only the throat and belly stay white. The tail ends in four to six black rings.

Cheetahs do not roar; their most common call is a chirp. Females live alone, while males often join up in groups.

Why two patterns

The coat often suits where the cat lives

  • Rosettes in a leopard’s coat, detail of a coin

    Rosette

    For trees, forest and night.

  • Solid spots in a cheetah’s coat, detail of a coin

    Spot

    Black, without a ring.

A study of 35 cat species shows that whether a coat is patterned is linked to the habitat. How intricate and irregular the pattern is also relates to life in trees and to activity at night.

Over the course of evolution, such camouflage adapts comparatively quickly to a way of life. In the grey grass where cheetahs often live, their spots can take up the shadows of the blades and let the animals merge with their surroundings.

Rare coats

A black panther can be a leopard

Leopards with melanism, that is with almost black fur, are often called black panthers. Black cheetahs, by contrast, are not known.

In the rare king cheetah, the spots merge into blotches and stripes. It is not a species of its own but carries a rare variant of the gene Taqpep, which shapes the variations of the tabby pattern in domestic cats.

Young cheetahs wear a coat of their own as well: a thick, silvery grey mantle along the back, which they shed at about three months of age.

Gold Big Five Leopard – the African Leopard made of pure fine gold

Small in format, solid in substance: with the Gold Big Five Leopard you acquire minted fine gold whose value is based on the gold price. The gold coin issued in 2024 by the Republic of Chad carries a face value of 3,000 CFA Francs and depicts one of Africa's most iconic predators. The design is the personal touch – but the actual reason to buy is the precious metal it contains.

  • Investment objective: physical bullion coin focused on value preservation and inflation hedge.
  • Design: a majestic African Leopard in frontal portrait, together with the national emblem of Chad.
  • Material & fineness: 999/1,000 fine gold – pure, high-quality investment gold.
  • Format: 1/1,000 ounce, 16.00 mm diameter, Brilliant Uncirculated on blister card.
  • Manufacturer: minted by the renowned refinery Valcambi.
  • Origin: issued by the Republic of Chad, year of issue 2024.

The design: the African Leopard in fine minting

The leopard has always stood for strength, grace and vigilance – qualities finely rendered on this gold coin. The reverse shows the predator's head in frontal view, accompanied by the inscription "LEOPARD", the name of the edition. On the blister card, the animal is impressively staged: a leopard on a weathered tree trunk, with the vast savanna behind it. The design thus combines a lifelike depiction with classic minting artistry.

The obverse bears the coat of arms of Chad along with the inscriptions "REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD" – the issuing country – and "3000 FRANCS CFA" – the face value. The fineness "999/1000 FINE GOLD" is also noted, confirming the high purity of the fine gold used.

Fine gold, format and minting quality

As gold coins in a miniature format, this edition is aimed at anyone who wants to build up physical gold holdings step by step. The technical key facts at a glance:

  • Fineness: 999/1,000 (pure fine gold)
  • Fine weight: 0.031 g – equivalent to 1/1,000 troy ounce
  • Diameter: 16.00 mm
  • Year of issue: 2024, condition Brilliant Uncirculated (new goods)
  • Mintage: strictly limited to 50,000 pieces worldwide
  • Delivered on a blister card with integrated certificate of authenticity

The limited mintage and the clean execution by Valcambi turn this small format into a handy piece of investment gold that stores well and can be passed on at any time.

Why gold: preserving value for millennia

Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has outlived every other one. It has intrinsic value, is recognized worldwide, and has never been worthless. That is precisely why it serves as a proven inflation hedge and reliable crisis protection – a store of value that preserves purchasing power across generations. It is no coincidence that the world's central banks hold enormous gold reserves.

For private investors, it also holds true that profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free if the holding period is at least one year. The high liquidity ensures that your fine gold can be traded worldwide and quickly resold if needed.

Despite the appealing leopard design, what you acquire here is full-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold whose value is based on the gold price.

For investors and anyone wanting to give real gold as a gift

The Gold Big Five Leopard is well suited as an entry point into physical gold investment and as a building block for growing wealth step by step – because many small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable holding. It is also a genuine recommendation for occasions such as birthdays, christenings or Christmas: whoever gives this coin is not giving a mere object, but a real asset made of pure fine gold. In this way, you combine an expressive animal motif with the enduring substance of gold – a tangible value that lasts.
