Deutsche Mark · 2026 Edition

The coin that passed through our hands for half a century. When memory turns to gold.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche MarkReverse with the eagle

You are looking at the value side.

It jingled in coat pockets, lay on shop counters and in piggy banks. The One between the oak twigs went through millions of hands until the farewell of the D-Mark. Now its image returns as a homage, struck in fine gold.

  • Mintage 5,000 pieces
  • Proof
  • 0.5 g

It was never just money. It was a promise.

On 20 June 1948, every resident of the three western zones exchanged 40 Reichsmarks for 40 D-Marks, the “Kopfgeld” or per-head quota. The very next day, shop windows were full to bursting. The new currency set off the economic miracle.

In the Bundesbank’s words, the D-Mark enjoyed trust from its first day and kept it to the very end. Over five decades it also became an international symbol of stable money.

12 billion

Some never fully let go of it: according to the Bundesbank, around twelve billion D-Marks have still not been exchanged, more than half of them in coins.

From the Kopfgeld to the farewell

Half a century of the Mark

  1. 1948

    A new beginning

On 20 June the currency reform takes effect. From the next day, the Deutsche Mark is the only legal tender in the three western zones.

  2. 1950

The One with the oak leaves

At the end of 1950 the one-mark coin enters circulation, designed by Josef Bernhart of Munich. Its motif remains unchanged until the farewell of the D-Mark.

  3. 1951

    The Heiermann

Albert Holl’s silver five-mark coin is struck for the first time and circulates from May 1952. It remains the only circulation coin of the Federal Republic made of silver.

  4. 1957

    The Bundesbank

On 1 August the Deutsche Bundesbank takes over from the Bank deutscher Länder, which had issued the first D-Marks in 1948.

  5. 1990

    One Mark for everyone

“If the D-Mark comes, we stay. If it doesn’t, we’ll go to it” was a slogan at the Monday demonstrations. On 1 July 1990 it came to the GDR, even before German reunification.

  6. 2001

    The farewell

In farewell, the Deutsche Bundesbank issues the One as a gold coin, one million pieces in fine gold. Since 1 January 2002 Germans have paid in euros.

The motif

An image everyone knows

The value side follows the one-mark coin of the past. Anyone who once held the Mark recognises it at once.

Value side with the large One between two oak twigs and the lettering Deutsche Mark
Reverse with the eagle
The large One
Clear and unadorned, it stands in the centre, just as on the one-mark coin designed by the Munich artist Josef Bernhart.
Two oak twigs
To the left and right, two oak twigs with acorns frame the numeral. Oak leaves already graced the pfennig coins, and the German 1, 2 and 5 cent coins still show them today.
The eagle
On the other side the eagle spreads its wings, worked down to the last feather. The wings carry the face value and Republic of Liberia in small letters.

The finish

Two ways to catch the light

Your coinProof

Proof

The field shines deep like a mirror, the motif lies on it in matte relief. With this finish, dies and blanks are specially polished and the blanks are fed into the press one by one.

Reverse Proof

Here it is the other way round: the field is frosted, the motif gleams like a mirror. Every leaf vein and every feather catches the light.

Some things pass.

The memory remains.

The D-Mark is history. Its image in precious metal remains, for you and for those you will one day pass it on to.

5,000

pieces in the edition

0.5 g fine gold · 999,9/1.000 · 14 mm · Proof · Coincard

An own edition by Kettner Edelmetalle, not an issue of the Federal Republic of Germany or the Deutsche Bundesbank. The issuing country is the Republic of Liberia, hence the face value in dollars.

0.5g Gold Deutsche Mark 2026 – a legendary cult design in pure fine gold

  • Minting quality: The highest possible finish in Proof (PP) – mirror-like surfaces and finely matted relief.
  • Strictly limited: Worldwide mintage of only 5,000 pieces.
  • Pure fine gold: 0.5 grams of gold at the highest purity of 999.9/1,000.
  • Iconic design: The classic "1 Deutsche Mark" with oak leaves and a majestic eagle.
  • Investment character: The value is based on the fine gold content and moves in line with the gold price – tradable and resalable worldwide.
  • Manufacturer: An exclusive in-house minting by Kettner Edelmetalle.
  • Country of origin: Issued for the Republic of Liberia, face value 25 dollars.

The new gold coin "1 Deutsche Mark 2026" brings back one of Germany's most popular currency designs – this time cast solidly in gold. At just 14 millimeters in diameter, this edition combines 0.5 grams of fine gold at a purity of 999.9/1,000 with a design that accompanied the everyday lives of millions of people for decades. Small in format, clear in statement: here, the precious metal content is what matters most.

The design: Deutsche Mark, oak leaves and eagle

The obverse shows the large numeral "1" at the center, flanked by two symmetrically arranged oak branches, each with an acorn. The oak leaves – long a German symbol of strength and steadfastness – are elaborately detailed with leaf veins and fine notches. Below is the inscription "DEUTSCHE MARK" along with the year 2026. The reverse belongs to the majestic eagle: widely spread wings, finely graduated plumage, an open beak, and a head turned to the side. Around the edge, the coin states "0.5g 9999 FEINGOLD" as well as the issuing details of the Republic of Liberia. This makes the piece a commemorative gold coin with a German design – the minting is carried out for Liberia, while the imagery is thoroughly German.

The design deliberately draws on the great tradition of German monetary history – from the historic Goldmark of the German Empire, through the famous D-Mark, to the official 1-DM gold coin. Anyone who once held the Deutsche Mark in their own hands will associate this image with a piece of economic and everyday history.

Proof quality – the highest minting standard

This edition was crafted in Proof quality, the most demanding of all minting techniques. PP quality creates sharply detailed, mirror-like surfaces in contrast to matted relief sections – every leaf vein, every feather stands out in relief. A fine beaded circle frames the coin's design, and the reeded edge rounds off the overall high-quality impression. The piece is delivered protected in an elaborately designed coincard featuring the eagle motif.

Why this small gold investment is convincing

Even in miniature format, the principle holds: gold is humanity's oldest currency, a proven store of value for over 6,000 years, possessing an intrinsic value that has never fallen to zero. Anyone who regularly acquires small units builds up physical wealth step by step – the substance of this coin is its fine gold, whose value is based on the world market price of gold. As a physical tangible asset, gold also serves as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection against currency risks.

  • Value preservation: Physical fine gold as a lasting tangible asset, independent of paper money.
  • Getting started in small steps: Small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune.
  • High liquidity: Gold is recognized worldwide and can be sold again at any time.
  • Strictly limited edition: The low mintage of 5,000 pieces underscores the special character of this minting.
Gold is the oldest currency in the world – it has outlived all others and will not lose its shine in the future either.

Small amount, big impact

Compared to larger gold coins or gold bars, the Deutsche Mark 2026 offers a low-threshold entry point: the capital outlay remains manageable, yet the fine gold it contains is genuine investment gold. Small mintages like this one are also in demand alongside popular collector's coins with very low mintages – however, with this product, the pure gold value takes center stage, while the design provides the personal touch. In this way, a nostalgic design and the hard substance of the precious metal combine into a clear proposition.

Despite the emotional design, what you acquire here is fully valid investment gold – minted fine gold whose value is based on the price of gold. This makes it possible to give real gold as a gift for a personal occasion such as a birthday or christening: a physical investment that endures, rather than a fleeting gesture.
