On New Year cards around 1900, the wish was already in the picture: four-leaf clovers, ladybirds, horseshoes. These are the signs our pieces carry in gold and silver. This coin does not just carry its sign, it takes its shape.

The four-leaf clover

Four leaves, where three usually grow.

Clover normally has three leaflets, four only in very rare cases. The Botanic Gardens of the University of Bonn call the four-leaf clover a rare exception.

The disposition lies in the genes, as a plant breeder at the University of Georgia found. Whether the fourth leaf actually grows also depends on light and temperature.

The German dictionary Duden calls it Glücksklee: clover with an exceptionally four-part leaf, regarded as a lucky charm. The dictionary of the Brothers Grimm also lists the four-leaf clover as a Glücksblatt, a leaf of luck.

The lucky clover sold in pots, by the way, is a wood sorrel from southern Mexico that naturally has four leaves. It came to Europe in the 19th century.

“A four-leaf clover is a rarity. Lucky is the person who happens to find one.”
Museum der Kulturen, Basel

This coin itself takes its shape.

The lucky ladybird

Seven spots, a lucky number.

In German folk speech the ladybird is called Glückskäfer, the lucky beetle, as the German dictionary Duden records. The Etymological Dictionary of German calls ladybirds the best known and best loved beetles, regarded as a symbol of luck.

The classic lucky charm is the seven-spot ladybird, red with seven black spots. Seven has always been considered a lucky number, writes NABU, the German nature conservation union.

By the way, the spots do not reveal a ladybird’s age. Their number stays the same throughout its life of at most one year.

A seven-spot ladybird eats 100 to 150 aphids a day, its larva 400 to 600 before it pupates.

“As a lucky charm, the seven-spot ladybird … enjoys great popularity.”
NABU, Naturschutzbund Deutschland

On this coin a ladybird sits on one leaf of the clover.

The design

The sign as a shape.

The coin has the shape of a clover, with a ladybird sitting on one leaf.

Luck to give

A wish you keep.

At the turn of the year people give lucky charms. The New Year lucky charms we know today came about in the 19th century.

Many people do not want to throw their lucky charms away or pass them on, for fear the luck might go with them.

Whether lucky charms really bring luck may be left open, writes the Volkskundemuseum Wien. And it names what they are meant to say:

“Whoever gives a lucky charm wants to say: I care about you.”
Volkskundemuseum Wien

A gift for a birth or the new year, for instance: the coin comes in a case.

Gold does not corrode and does not dull. So the wish stays as it was struck.

Gold Clover Coin – real fine gold in a lucky symbol

The Gold Clover Coin from the 2023 minting year brings pure fine gold into one of the most charming shapes the coin market has to offer. Issued for the Republic of Chad and bearing a face value of 3,000 CFA francs, this small gold coin combines solid substance with a universally understood design. The real reason to buy it lies not in the design, but in the precious metal it contains: its value is based on the gold it holds, and it moves with the gold price. This makes entry into physical gold coins possible with a very small quantity.

  • Design: A four-leaf clover with a tiny ladybug resting on it – two time-honored lucky symbols merged here into a sculpted, finely chiseled relief. The shaped contour, modeled after the clover itself, makes the piece instantly recognizable.
  • Material & fineness: Struck from gold with a fineness of 999/1,000 – that is, nearly pure fine gold that permanently retains its warm shine.
  • Manufacturer: Production is handled by the renowned Swiss traditional house Valcambi, a globally respected name in precious metal processing.
  • Weight: 1/1,000 oz, corresponding to 0.031 g of fine gold.
  • Mintage: Limited worldwide to 50,000 pieces.
  • Condition & packaging: Brilliant Uncirculated new coin, delivered in a protective case.

A design full of symbolic power

The four-leaf clover has accompanied people for centuries as a symbol of luck and good fortune. On the reverse of this issue, a small ladybug – likewise a classic bringer of luck – also sits on one of the four leaves. The obverse shows the coat of arms of Chad, framed by the inscriptions REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD for the issuing country, the face value 3000 FRANCS CFA, and the fineness designation 999/1000 FINE GOLD. In this way, the coin documents both its origin from Chad and its gold content directly on the strike.

Investment gold in a small denomination

Even though the design carries a personal touch, what you are acquiring here is full-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold whose value is tied to the gold price. Small units in particular are excellent for beginning wealth building in manageable steps. Those who regularly purchase small amounts of gold accumulate, over the years, a considerable physical holding. And because gold is recognized worldwide and highly liquid, your holding remains tradable and resalable at any time.

Physical gold is humanity's oldest currency and has been a proven store of value for more than 6,000 years. It possesses intrinsic value, has never had a price of zero, and protects against loss of purchasing power. As an inflation hedge and as crisis protection, this precious metal has proven itself across generations – it is no coincidence that central banks are among the largest holders of gold in the world.

Gold retains its shine over millennia – and with a small minted piece like this, you bring a piece of that permanence into your own holdings.

Comparison: small gold coin or classic bar?

Compared to larger investment products such as a 1-ounce bullion coin or a gold bar, the Clover coin is significantly lower-priced and therefore especially accessible. The premium per gram is naturally higher for such small units – but in return you receive a finely designed, minted piece of gold that is easy to give as a gift and to pass on. If you want to give real investment gold on occasions such as a birthday, wedding, or christening, this coin is a fitting way to hand over a lasting asset instead of a fleeting gesture.

Another advantage of physical gold: profits from its sale are generally tax-free for private individuals if at least one year has passed between purchase and sale. In this way, this Gold Clover Coin combines an endearing design with the solid qualities of a globally recognized crisis hedge and investment.
