Heraeus
From a family’s coat of arms, struck in gold.
A family business headquartered in Hanau. Its roots go back to a pharmacy that the family ran from 1660 onwards.
The emblem
The hand with the roses

Heraeus bars bear a round emblem with the legend HERAEUS EDELMETALLE HANAU. A hand grasps the stems of three roses, with an H beside it.
The hand with the roses comes from the Heraeus family coat of arms, of which the emblem shows only a part. The family chronicle suggests that the apothecary Isaac Heraeus chose the motif in memory of his birthplace, Güstrow.

On the minted bars, Heraeus, Feingold 999.9, the emblem and the weight stand out smooth and crisp in the metal.

From the unicorn to the flame
1668
“Zum weißen Einhorn”
On the market square of Hanau’s New Town, Isaac Heraeus opens his own pharmacy in a half-timbered house and names it “Zum weißen Einhorn”, the White Unicorn.
1694
The first gold
His son, Franz Heraeus, supplies fine gold used to gild the letters, the ball and the weathercock of the French church in Hanau. Heraeus calls this the first contact with precious metals in its history.
1856
Germany’s first platinum melt
Platinum is much sought after in jewellery making, but until then it can only be forged and pressed when white-hot. After lengthy experiments, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus melts two kilograms of platinum with an oxyhydrogen blowpipe.
1768 °C
Platinum does not melt until it reaches this temperature.
1945
Destruction and a new beginning
Air raids in 1944 and 1945 almost completely destroy the works in Hanau, and on 19 March 1945 the original pharmacy building as well. After the war, Heraeus at first makes cooking pots, hotplates and immersion heaters. Above the entrance of the original building, rebuilt in 1951 and 1952, a bronze unicorn has recalled the pharmacy ever since.
2025
365 years
The family celebrates “365 years of Heraeus”. The company still belongs to the family today.
Assayed in Switzerland
The signature on the card
In our product photos, the card shows the fineness and the weight, the line “Vereidigter Edelmetallprüfer” (sworn assayer) with the signature Ruffoni, and the round seal of Argor-Heraeus with the word Switzerland.
Alessandro Ruffoni had been a sworn assayer at Argor-Heraeus since 1991, licensed by the Swiss Central Office for Precious Metals Control. His signature appeared on the certificates of bars from Argor-Heraeus and from Heraeus. After his retirement in 2023, it was gradually replaced by that of Simone Marsan.
Argor was founded in Ticino in 1951. The name combines argento and oro, the Italian words for silver and gold.

The 1g gold bar from Heraeus brings physical fine gold in its most accessible form to the blister card. Struck from 999.9 fine gold, the rectangular bar with finely rounded corners measures a compact 15 x 8.7 x 0.5 mm – small enough for your waistcoat pocket, yet a fully-fledged building block for wealth accumulation. The obverse features the well-known Heraeus logo with the stylized tree, the inscription "Feingold 999.9" and the weight indication "1 g". The design is the personal touch; the actual substance and reason for purchase is the fine gold it contains.
The bar is manufactured to the highest international standards at Heraeus or its Swiss sister company Argor-Heraeus – a Good Delivery producer recognized by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA). This certification makes the gold tradable worldwide and beyond any doubt. The reverse of the blister card indicates the fineness, weight and the signature of the sworn precious metals assayer; each piece also carries an individual serial number. This popular bestseller thus combines the highest purity with complete traceability.
Investment gold whose value lies in the fine gold
Even though the bar is pleasantly small, its value is based primarily on the fine gold it contains and develops in line with the gold price. Gold is the oldest currency in the world, a proven store of value for over 6,000 years – and thanks to its intrinsic value, it has never been worth zero. Anyone who wants to diversify their wealth appreciates the low correlation of the yellow metal to other assets. It is not without reason that central banks around the globe hold enormous gold reserves: they distrust their own fiat money, which can be created without limit.
Gold has been shining for thousands of years – and will never lose its shine in the future.
As a tangible building block for your inflation hedge, the small bar plays to its strengths. While paper money loses purchasing power year after year due to the printing press, the supply of gold is naturally scarce and limited. It is precisely this scarcity that supports its value over long periods. As inflation rises, physical gold retains its purchasing power – one reason why it has always served as protection against currency and crisis risks.
Start small, build great wealth
The 1-gram bar is the ideal entry point into physical gold investment. It can be conveniently accumulated in small steps, and many such units add up over the years to a considerable fortune. Because its low unit value means it can always be sold individually, you remain flexible: gold has high liquidity and can be quickly converted into cash worldwide. Another plus point for private investors – profits from the sale are generally tax-free, provided at least one year has passed between purchase and sale.
The bar also makes a fine gift: for a christening, birthday or wedding, you are not giving away a perishable souvenir but genuine investment gold that can carry its value across generations. This makes the Heraeus bar equally suitable for long-term wealth accumulation, retirement provision and as a solid foundation to pass on to children and grandchildren.
