British coins carried five portraits of Elizabeth II, from Mary Gillick to Jody Clark. The legend reads “100th BIRTHDAY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II”, with 1926 and 2026.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On the first decimal coins of 1968, Arnold Machin replaced the wreath with a diadem, a wedding present from Queen Mary. For the portrait from 1985 onwards, Raphael Maklouf first worked from photographs and was then granted two sittings. From 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley let the portrait fill the field, because the coins had become smaller.

Many commemorative pieces for the Queen come from small issuing countries in the Pacific, such as Niue, Tokelau and the Cook Islands, until 2023 with the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley and his initials IRB.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.

1536 · Hampton Court

Ten guardians on the bridge

In 1536 Henry VIII had the stone bridge over the moat at Hampton Court completed, built of brick and more than 600 tonnes of stone. On it stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts, displaying the King’s ancestry.

In the 17th century the bridge and the beasts vanished into the moat for more than 150 years. When the excavation began in 1909, only fragments of the beasts were found; the figures guarding the entrance today are copies from the 1950s.

2 June 1953 · Westminster

Ten beasts in plaster

For the coronation of Elizabeth II, ten heraldic beasts stood outside the Abbey’s glass-fronted annexe, designed by Eric Bedford: six feet tall, made of plaster, the work of James Woodford. His model was the King’s Beasts of Hampton Court.

The ten beasts chosen were those that best showed the Queen’s ancestry, from the Lion of England and the Griffin of Edward III to the Unicorn of Scotland and the White Horse of Hanover.

Copies in Portland stone stand guard at Kew outside the Palm House, a gift in 1956; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The Sovereign

A gold coin travels the world

Henry VII gave the name Sovereign to a new gold coin in 1489. In the 19th century the Sovereign was called the “chief coin of the world”, accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints, from Sydney from 1855 to Pretoria from 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all. Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new St George, drawn by Jennifer McKenna.

The British Crown

Five portraits of the Queen on British coins, then Charles III: each face stands for its time.

Faces that endure.

0.5 g Gold – 100th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II 2026 in Proof

A century of world history, condensed onto a small disc of the purest gold: To mark the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, the Bavarian State Mint (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt) issues this 100-francs gold coin. What matters most for the buying decision is not the design, however dignified its execution, but the fine gold it contains – 0.5 grams of pure precious metal, whose value is determined by the gold price.

  • Minting quality: Highest finish Proof (PP) with mirrored fields and matte relief.
  • Design: Youthful profile portrait of the monarch with a delicately adorned diadem; the years 1926 and 2026 flank the portrait.
  • Material / fineness: 999.9/1,000 fine gold – the highest common purity grade for investment gold.
  • Weight & format: 0.5 g fine gold with a diameter of only 11.00 mm, delivered in a protective coin capsule.
  • Manufacturer: Bavarian State Mint (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt), one of Germany's most tradition-rich mints.
  • Mintage: Strictly limited worldwide to just 2,026 pieces.

The design – royal dignity in the purest gold

The obverse shows Elizabeth II in a youthful right-facing profile, her hair in soft waves, crowned by a diadem richly set with pearls and gemstones. A pearl earring and the classically draped garment in Roman style lend the depiction a timeless elegance. The inscription "100th BIRTHDAY OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II" runs in a semicircle above, while the years 1926 and 2026 span the arc from birth to jubilee. The reverse bears the coat of arms of the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the leopard's head, the national motto "JUSTICE – PAIX – TRAVAIL", as well as the details "0.5 g Au 999.9" and the face value "100 FRANCS". As an official Congolese francs issue, the coin is a state-guaranteed legal tender.

Queen Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 and ascended to the British throne in 1952. As the longest-reigning monarch in British history, she stood for stability and continuity for over seven decades – a symbol well suited to a lasting store of value like gold. The fine, sculpturally raised minting in Proof quality brings out every detail – from the texture of the hair to the crown jewels – with striking sharpness.

Investment gold in a handy small format

Despite the personal occasion, what you are acquiring here is fully-fledged investment gold: minted fine gold whose substance and true value lie in the precious metal it contains. Gold is the world's oldest currency, a proven store of value for over 6,000 years, and it has never been worth zero. For anyone wishing to build wealth in small steps, this 0.5-gram gold coin offers an affordable entry point into physical gold investment – because small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune.

  • Value preservation: physical gold as a solid building block for storing value against loss of purchasing power.
  • Inflation hedge: gold has long been regarded as a reliable inflation hedge and preserves purchasing power.
  • Crisis protection: globally recognised and independent of fiat money – strong crisis protection in uncertain times.
  • Liquidity: small denomination, always easily tradable and quickly converted into cash.
  • Tax advantage: profits from sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of more than one year.

In our gold coins category you will find numerous further issues to build up your holdings. With a mintage strictly limited to 2,026 pieces, this coin makes an appealing building block for your physical gold investment – and if you wish to honour a special occasion, give the gift of real investment gold instead of a fleeting present. In doing so, you also lay the foundation for wealth-building across generations, measured year after year against the gold price.
