The Butterfly Hunter in pure gold – a Biedermeier classic as investment gold

With the gold coin edition "The Butterfly Hunter" you bring one of the most charming works of German art history into your portfolio – and in its most enduring form: struck in pure fine gold. The famous painting by Carl Spitzweg provides the personal touch, but the real substance is the precious metal itself. Whoever acquires this coin purchases genuine gold, whose value is determined by the global gold price.

  • Design: The reverse depicts Spitzweg's "The Butterfly Hunter" from 1840 – an otherworldly-looking gentleman in a light-coloured smock, chasing two magnificent blue butterflies with a net, collecting box and red umbrella. A humorous and warm-hearted moment, finely detailed and featuring the characteristic Spitzweg lettering.
  • Material & fineness: Struck in top-quality gold with a fineness of 999/1,000, with a fine weight of 0.031 g (1/1,000 oz). The handy rectangular format measures just 11 x 15.4 mm and is itself a technical masterpiece.
  • Manufacturer: Produced by Valcambi, one of Switzerland's most renowned precious metals mints and known worldwide for the highest refining quality.
  • Issuing country & face value: Official legal tender of the Republic of Chad with a face value of 3,000 CFA francs, year of issue 2025.
  • Mintage & condition: Strictly limited to 50,000 pieces, Brilliant Uncirculated and protected in a high-quality blister card.

Carl Spitzweg – art history in the smallest of spaces

Carl Spitzweg (1808–1885), the great master of Biedermeier painting from Munich, created "The Butterfly Hunter" around 1840 as a symbol of bourgeois tranquillity and subtle humour. The original – oil on wood – is now part of the collection of a German museum and continues to delight generations of art lovers. On this coin, the scene comes alive once more in warm golden lustre: the golden light filtering through the canopy of leaves, the brilliant blue butterflies, the astonished collector. The obverse bears the coat of arms of the Republic of Chad with the inscriptions "REPUBLIQUE DU TCHAD", "3000 FRANCS CFA" and "999/1000 FINE GOLD". Thus, art history is combined with precise minting artistry.

Why this coin is a genuine gold investment

As appealing as the design may be – what is purchased here is above all substance. The value of this edition is based on the fine gold it contains and moves in line with the gold price. This makes the coin a building block for wealth accumulation in small steps: those who regularly acquire small quantities of gold accumulate a considerable physical fortune over the years. Gold is the world's oldest currency and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years, never having fallen to zero.

  • Value preservation: Gold has intrinsic value and protects against the gradual loss of purchasing power – a solid inflation hedge.
  • Crisis resilience: As a globally recognised medium of exchange, gold proves itself as crisis protection against political and economic turmoil.
  • Liquidity: Physical gold can be traded and resold at any time and can easily be converted into cash.
  • Tax advantage: Investment gold is generally exempt from VAT; capital gains are usually tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

This makes the edition an excellent entry point into physical gold investment – also as a way to give, on a special occasion such as a birthday, christening or wedding, not a perishable item but genuine investment gold instead. An asset that endures and can be passed down through generations.

Despite the personal design, what you acquire here is full-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold whose value is determined by the gold price.

For investors who combine beauty with permanence

The combination of a limited mintage, finest gold from Valcambi and an immortal motif from the Romantic era makes this coin an attractive building block for any gold investment. As part of the "Art & Culture" series, it brings together aesthetics and value retention – without the investment aspect fading into the background. For gold has shone for thousands of years and will not lose its lustre in the future either.
