Bavaria in fine gold: The anniversary thaler marking 80 years of the Bavarian Constitution

  • Design: The patron saint Bavaria raises a laurel wreath high into the air, with the Bavarian Lion watching over her side, while at her feet the constitution scroll unfurls bearing the inscription "Bavarian Constitution 1946–2026" – a deliberate homage to the historic double thaler of 1848.
  • Material and fineness: A full troy ounce of pure gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – exactly 31.1 grams of precious metal in investment quality.
  • Manufacturer: Struck by the Bavarian Main Mint in Munich, one of Germany's five state mints, whose history dates back to the year 1158.
  • Face value and format: 100 Bayern Thaler, 37.00 mm diameter, reeded edge.
  • Condition and packaging: Brilliant Uncirculated (BU), securely protected in a coin capsule.

On December 1, 1946, the citizens of Bavaria voted on their new constitution in a referendum. A week later, it came into force. Eighty years on, the Bavarian Main Mint honors this foundation of the Free State with a special edition of its successful Bayern Thaler: the "Bavaria Thaler". The troy ounce in fine gold combines regional history with physical precious metal. That is precisely what makes it appealing to both investors and collectors alike.

Two sides, one story: the coin design in detail

Obverse: Bavaria, the lion, and the constitution scroll

At the center stands Bavaria, the female personification of the state. With a raised arm, she holds a laurel wreath, the classic symbol of victory and honor. Beside her rests the lion, the heraldic animal of the state. And on the pedestal? There lies the constitution scroll, inscribed with "Bavarian Constitution 1946–2026". The scene is set against the silhouette of the Bavarian map and a fine, diagonally running line grid. The legend reads "80 Years of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria" as well as "Bavarian State Mint", with the face value and year of issue in the upper left: "100 Bayern Thaler 2026".

The composition is no coincidence. It draws on the historic double thaler that King Maximilian II had struck in 1848 to mark the 30th anniversary of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bavaria, translating it into a modern, clear visual language.

Reverse: the great Bavarian state coat of arms

Two upright, crowned lions hold the coat of arms shield with the Bavarian lozenges, above which a crown is enthroned. Above this is the inscription "Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt" with the addition "Since 1158", below which are the details "1 oz Au 999.9" and "Munich". Weight and fineness are thus directly documented on the coin.

Bayern Thaler: Bavaria's answer to the great bullion coins

The Bayern Thaler continues the tradition of the historic thalers that circulated as legal tender in the Kingdom of Bavaria until German unification in 1871. Since spring 2025, the Main Mint has been reviving this tradition as a modern investment product, and since October 2025 also in gold. Demand has been remarkable: according to the Bavarian Ministry of Finance, over 80,000 pieces had been sold by September 2026. The first two designs featured the fairy-tale castle of Neuschwanstein. With "Bavaria", the first special edition of the Bayern Thaler series now follows, available since September 8, 2026.

In total, the anniversary edition is issued in seven versions. Alongside the fine gold ounce, there are variants in fine silver, including strictly limited pieces for numismatists: 80 examples each of the two 1-kilogram editions, and 960 partially gilded silver thalers – reflecting the 960 months since 1946. The gold version offered here, in bullion quality, is aimed primarily at investors who value pure precious metal. Silver may be the little brother, but those looking to bundle wealth compactly reach for gold.

Anyone comparing classic gold coins will quickly recognize the strengths here. With a diameter of 37.00 mm and 999.9 fine gold, the thaler is on par with the Vienna Philharmonic. The Krugerrand, by contrast, consists of 22-karat gold with a copper content – more scratch-resistant, but not fine gold. Compared to the Neuschwanstein thaler, the Bavaria edition offers an anniversary design with a clear historical occasion. An honest note: as a young series, the Bayern Thaler is not yet as internationally recognized as the Maple Leaf or Krugerrand. In German-speaking regions, where the Bavarian Main Mint enjoys an excellent reputation, this hardly matters.

Why fine gold has inspired trust for millennia

Gold is the oldest currency in the world. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a unit of measure for trade, later adorning kings and emperors as a symbol of power and prestige. Over more than 6,000 years, the yellow metal has outlasted countless paper currencies. It has never had a value of zero, because it possesses an inherent, intrinsic value.

Gold is God's money – it cannot be multiplied at will, cannot be printed, and cannot be devalued by decree.

While fiat money is created by central banks, the supply of gold is limited. This scarcity makes it a proven inflation hedge that preserves purchasing power across generations. Remarkably, the world's largest gold holders are, of all entities, the central banks themselves. The precious metal has also proven its worth as crisis protection during political or economic turmoil and against currency risks. It is recognized worldwide, highly liquid, and can be quickly converted into cash when needed.

Your advantages at a glance

  • VAT-free: As investment gold under § 25c UStG, exempt from value-added tax.
  • Tax-free profits: After a holding period of at least one year, capital gains are generally tax-free.
  • Durable: Gold does not corrode and retains its shine – ideal for retirement provision and passing on to the next generation.
  • Double appeal: Precious metal value plus a historic anniversary design from German minting.

A piece of Bavaria for your vault and your collection

The 100 Bayern Thaler "Bavaria – 80 Years of the Bavarian Constitution" is far more than a troy ounce of fine gold. It tells a story of democracy, of tradition, and of a mint that has been striking coins for over 860 years. Whether as a cornerstone for long-term wealth building, as a special gift for an anniversary, or as a complement to the series' Neuschwanstein editions: this Brilliant Uncirculated gold coin from Munich combines lasting value preservation with genuine local history.
