The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

The 2026 Design: When the Savanna Comes to Life
What makes this issue so special? One glance at the obverse says it all. The 2026 minting depicts a fascinating scene from the African wilderness: a mighty, fully grown elephant strides majestically across the vast savanna, accompanied by a second, somewhat smaller elephant in the background. In the foreground – and this is the truly surprising detail of this year's edition – a zebra drinks at a waterhole. This composition gives the coin a vivid dynamism rarely found in bullion coins.
Along the raised rim, the inscriptions "AFRICAN WILDLIFE" and "ELEPHANT" frame the design, complemented by the weight designation "1/10 oz" and the fineness marking "Au 999.9". The warm, rich golden tone brings out every detail of the engraving in striking relief – from the fine wrinkles of the elephants' skin to the delicate blades of grass on the savanna.
The Reverse: The Somali State Emblem in Finest Detail
The reverse presents the official state emblem of the Republic of Somalia. Two proud leopards support a shield with an inner star, beneath which two traditional spears and two palm leaves cross in symmetrical arrangement. The inscription "SOMALI REPUBLIC" along with the year of issue "2026" and the face value "100 SHILLINGS" complete the overall design. A surrounding beaded border and the reeded edge give this small coin a remarkable depth and tactile quality.
Why 1/10 Ounce? The Clever Denomination for Smart Investors
Not everyone wants – or needs – to purchase a full ounce of gold right away. The 1/10 oz variant offers decisive advantages:
- Lower entry threshold: Even with a modest budget, you secure genuine, physical gold of the highest purity.
- Maximum flexibility: Smaller units can be sold more easily when needed or used as a medium of exchange – an invaluable advantage, especially in times of crisis.
- Perfect for collecting: Anyone following the African Wildlife series with its annually changing design builds up an impressive collection piece by piece.
- Tax advantage: Like all gold coins, this issue is also exempt from VAT. In addition, capital gains are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.
Gold is the oldest currency in human history – it has outlasted every crisis, every war, and every inflation. While paper money comes and goes, gold remains. Always.
The African Wildlife Series: A Success Story
Since its introduction, the Somalia Elephant series has become one of the most popular bullion coin series worldwide. The secret? The combination of an unlimited mintage – which keeps it affordable as a pure investment product – and the annually changing design, which makes collectors' hearts beat faster. Earlier years sometimes achieve considerable premiums on the secondary market. A phenomenon that underscores the dual nature of this coin: investment and collector's item in one.
Gold: The Ultimate Store of Value for Over 6,000 Years
Why gold? The answer is as old as civilization itself. Even in ancient Egypt, the yellow precious metal served as a unit of measurement in trade. Kings and emperors wore it as a sign of their power. And today? Today, the central banks of the world hoard thousands of tons of gold in their vaults – a silent admission that they do not fully trust their own product, fiat money.
Throughout its entire history, gold has never once had a value of zero. It is scarce, durable, tradable worldwide, and possesses an intrinsic value that exists independently of governments, central banks, or political decisions. While the purchasing power of paper currencies steadily erodes through inflation, gold has preserved its shine for millennia – both literally and figuratively.
