The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

A Design That Brings the Wilderness to Life
On the obverse of the Gold Somalia Elephant, a majestic bull elephant rises against a vast African landscape. In the background, a second elephant approaches, while in the foreground a zebra quenches its thirst – a scene full of calm and primal power. The inscription "AFRICAN WILDLIFE • ELEPHANT" along with the details "1/4 oz Au 999.9" leave no doubt: here you hold a piece of concentrated investment gold in your hands.
The reverse displays the national coat of arms of the Somali Republic: two rearing leopards flanking a shield with a five-pointed star, beneath crossed spears and palm branches. The minting year 2026 and the face value "200 SHILLINGS" round off the official state design.
Why the 1/4 Ounce Format Convinces
The quarter-ounce format is the Goldilocks point among gold coins: large enough to carry noticeable value, yet small enough to be flexibly sold, gifted, or exchanged in an emergency. Those thinking long-term also appreciate the tax advantages of gold – after a holding period of twelve months, profits from the sale are generally tax-free, and physical investment gold is in any case exempt from VAT.
"Gold is humanity's oldest currency – and it has outlived every paper currency so far."
Comparison with Other Bullion Classics
How does the Somalia Elephant compare to the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf, or Vienna Philharmonic? A brief look is worthwhile:
- Higher fineness: At 999.9/1,000, the Elephant surpasses the Krugerrand (916.6/1,000) and matches the Maple Leaf.
- Changing design: Unlike many classics, the Elephant's design changes year after year – adding extra appeal for collectors.
- German minting quality: The Bavarian State Mint stands for razor-sharp contours and flawless surfaces.
- Lower mintages: Compared to the bestsellers among bullion coins, the Somalia Elephant remains manageably limited.
Equally Appealing for Collectors and Investors
This coin is a dual talent. Investors appreciate the favorable premium per gram of fine gold and its international tradability. Collectors, on the other hand, enjoy the newly designed motif each year, the high minting quality, and the clear connection to African wildlife. Those who already own earlier years can complete an unbroken series with the 2026 piece – and newcomers get off to a strong start.
Gold possesses an intrinsic value that no central bank can print or dilute. For over 6,000 years, it has accompanied humanity as a store of value, and especially in uncertain times, it becomes clear why the world's largest central banks themselves rely on gold. The 1/4 oz Gold Somalia Elephant 2026 is therefore not just a small work of art – but a reliable companion for generations.
