The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

There are coins you buy. And there are coins you desire. The 1/2 oz Gold Somalia Elephant 2026 undoubtedly belongs to the second category. Since 2010, the "African Wildlife" series in gold has captivated collectors and investors alike – and the 2026 year of issue continues this tradition with a particularly striking design.
A Design That Tells Stories
Anyone who looks at the obverse of this coin is instantly drawn into the endless expanse of the African savanna. An imposing bull elephant strides powerfully through the landscape, accompanied by a smaller companion in the background. In the foreground, a zebra drinks at a waterhole – a detail that lends the image a vivid depth. Above it all, the sun looms as a silent observer. The inscriptions "AFRICAN WILDLIFE" and "ELEPHANT" frame the design, complemented by the weight and fineness details "1/2 oz Au 999.9".
The reverse displays the national coat of arms of the Republic of Somalia: a shield with a central star, flanked by two upright leopards. Below is the face value "500 SHILLINGS", to the side the year of issue "2026", and above the inscription "SOMALI REPUBLIC". Classic, dignified, timeless.
Why the Half Ounce in Particular?
Among connoisseurs, the 1/2 oz variant is considered a true insider tip. Why? Quite simply: mintages here are significantly lower than for the popular 1 oz edition. Lower mintage numbers mean greater desirability – and that is exactly what makes this coin so special. It combines the substantial gold value of a half troy ounce with the annually changing design of the series.
Gold is the oldest currency in human history. It has outlasted every crisis, every war and every inflation – and will continue to do so in the future.
Fine Gold in Perfection: 999.9/1,000
With a fineness of 999.9/1,000, this coin consists of virtually pure gold. No copper addition, no alloy – just the noblest of all metals in its purest form. The fine weight of exactly 15.55 grams corresponds to half a troy ounce and makes the coin a solid building block for any precious metals portfolio. As a buyer, you also benefit from a decisive advantage: investment gold is exempt from VAT in Germany. And if you hold your coin for at least one year, you can even realize profits from its sale completely tax-free.
The African Wildlife Series – A Success Story
For over 15 years, a new elephant design has been issued annually in the "African Wildlife" series. What began as an ambitious coin project has long since become one of the most popular gold coin series worldwide. Earlier years of issue are sometimes traded at substantial premiums above the pure gold value – a phenomenon that impressively underscores the combination of investment and collector value.
- Annually changing design – each edition is unique within the series
- Low mintage of the 1/2 oz variant – significantly rarer than the 1 oz edition
- Issuing country Somalia, face value 500 Shillings
- Struck in Germany – the highest quality standards of the Bavarian State Mint
- Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) in a coin capsule – optimal protection for long-term storage
Gold: The Ultimate Store of Value for Millennia
While paper money comes and goes, gold remains. Even in ancient Egypt, the yellow precious metal served as a unit of measure in trade. Kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. And to this day, the central banks of the world hold vast gold reserves – a quiet admission that they do not fully trust their own fiat money. Gold possesses an intrinsic value that endures independently of political decisions, central bank policy or economic upheavals.
The 1/2 oz Gold Somalia Elephant 2026 is more than just a coin. It is a piece of tangible security in uncertain times. An asset that can be passed down from generation to generation. And last but not least: a beautiful collector's item that combines the fascination of Africa with the timeless elegance of fine gold.
