The elephant
The eldest knows the way.
Elephants live in families. A herd usually consists of related females and their young, led by the matriarch, as a rule the oldest and most experienced. She knows where to find food and water. When danger looms, the herd forms a ring, the young in the middle.
In a study published in 2001, researchers used playback experiments to show that the oldest female’s better ability to discriminate can influence the social knowledge of the whole group. Elephants can communicate through deep calls that lie partly below the range of human hearing and carry a long way.
The trunk is nose and upper lip at once. It lifts a log, and just as well a single piece of straw.

The Gold Somalia Elephant is one of the popular bullion coins from the Bavarian State Mint. Since 2004, the African Wildlife series has been issued year after year with a fresh design. This 0.5-gram edition from 2024 is the smallest denomination in the series – and thus an affordable entry point into physical gold investment. Despite its dainty format, you are acquiring genuine gold here, whose value is primarily determined by the gold price.
The Design of the 2024 Edition
The African elephant gives the coin its name. The obverse shows two pachyderms touching trunks – behind them stretch grassland, a single tree and the vast savanna. "AFRICAN WILDLIFE" appears along the top edge, "ELEPHANT" along the bottom, with the details "0.5 g Au" and "999.9" in between. The reverse bears the national coat of arms of the Somali Republic with its two leopards, the year of issue 2024, and the face value of 20 shillings. A reeded edge rounds off the overall appearance. Because the design changes every year, each year of issue differs from the last – older editions are often traded on the market at an increased premium.
Why This Gold Coin in Proof Quality?
The Proof finish is the highest minting quality there is: mirror-like background surfaces meet finely frosted relief areas, making the elephants stand out in striking three-dimensional detail. This elaborate quality visibly sets the small 0.5-gram coin apart. As a recognized gold coin, the Somalia Elephant can be bought, sold, transported and stored easily anywhere in the world.
The African Wildlife Series in Comparison
The Elephant gold coin is available in many weight classes – from this 0.5-gram minting to the classic 1 ounce gold coin and up to large formats in the kilogram range. Those wishing to compare the series will also find a well-known silver coin with the identical yearly design. For beginners, the small edition in Proof quality is particularly appealing: it allows wealth building in manageable steps, without having to invest in a full ounce right away. Over time, many small units can grow into a serious holding of physical fine gold.
Small Gold Coin, Big Impact as an Investment
Gold is the oldest currency in the world and has been a proven store of value for over 6,000 years. It has never had a value of zero, protects against loss of purchasing power, and serves both as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. It is no coincidence that the world's central banks hold enormous gold reserves. Small amounts of gold add up over the years to a considerable fortune that can be passed down from generation to generation.
Despite the personal design, what you are acquiring here is fully-fledged investment gold – minted fine gold, whose value is determined by the gold price.
Anyone wishing to give genuine investment gold as a christening, birthday or wedding present is not simply marking an occasion, but handing over a real asset. Profits from the later sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. This makes the 0.5-gram Elephant from 2024 an ideal addition to any investment portfolio – highly liquid, tradable worldwide, and a lasting store of value.
