Among the world's best-known and most popular bullion coins is undoubtedly the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. The Royal Canadian Mint has been striking this classic since 1979. At its heart to this day is the maple leaf, both a national symbol and an ambassador for Canada. With the Purest Maple Leaf 2027, the mint takes purity to the extreme: 99.999% fine gold in one ounce. Gold coins rarely get any purer than this.
The Series: Debut in 2025, Third Year of Issue in 2027
The Purest Maple Leaf celebrated its debut in 2025. At that time, the Royal Canadian Mint released its first premium bullion issue made of one ounce of 99.999% purest gold, limited to just 800 pieces. In 2026, the second year of issue followed with 1,500 pieces. For the 2027 issue, the mintage is once again significantly scarcer, at 900 pieces worldwide. Anyone wishing to complete their collection of this series year by year should not miss this edition.
Maple Leaf in a Radiant Halo, Monarch in Profile
The design side features the mint's flagship motif: the golden maple leaf based on the design by Walter Ott, which has graced the Gold Maple Leaf for decades. Fine radial lines fill the inner field like a sunrise, giving the leaf depth and movement. The outer ring bears the inscriptions "CANADA," the fineness "99999" twice, as well as "FINE GOLD 1 OZ OR PUR."
The value side depicts the left-facing profile portrait of King Charles III. It was created by Canadian artist Steven Rosati, whose initials "SR" can be seen on the bust. The portrait is framed by the inscriptions "CHARLES III," the face value "200 DOLLARS," and the year "2027."
Premium Bullion on a Blister Card, With Certificate of Authenticity
The term "premium" is meant quite literally here. The coin sits in a removable capsule on a specially designed blister card. On the front, the northern lights glow above the silhouette of Canadian coniferous forests, alongside details of the mintage and purity. On the back, the Assay Certificate is printed directly onto the card. It is signed by the Chief Assayer of the Royal Canadian Mint and states the fineness and weight. This lets you verify authenticity at a glance, with no separate document required.

Purest or Classic Maple Leaf? Which One Suits You
The classic 1-ounce Maple Leaf gold coin is made of 999.9 gold, has a face value of 50 Canadian dollars, and is struck without a mintage limit. For investors who want as much fine gold as possible for their money, it's an excellent building block, much like a 1-ounce gold bar. The Purest Maple Leaf takes a different approach.
- Pro: At 99.999%, its purity exceeds the already very high bullion standard by yet another nine.
- Pro: The mintage is limited to 900 pieces, making the coin especially appealing to collectors.
- Pro: The printed certificate and protective capsule are already included.
- To consider: The premium is higher than that of the classic bullion coin. If you simply want to stack weight, the standard Maple Leaf is the better choice.
- Tip: Fine gold of this purity is very soft. It's best to leave the coin in its capsule.
Why Gold? Trusted for Over 6,000 Years
Gold is the world's oldest currency and has outlasted all others. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a measure for trade. Later, it moved goods along the Silk Road, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, it backed entire currencies under the gold standard. Fiat money can be printed at will, but gold remains scarce. This precious metal holds intrinsic value and has therefore never been worthless.
Gold is God's money. It has shone for thousands of years and will never lose its shine.
Tellingly, central banks are the largest holders of gold in the world. They keep the metal as a reserve, thereby hedging themselves against fluctuations in paper money. For you as a private investor, this means: gold protects against loss of purchasing power, helps guard against inflation and currency risks, and proves its worth in both political and economic crises. It is recognized worldwide, highly liquid, and can be converted into cash at any time. And it is durable enough to be passed down from generation to generation as a form of retirement provision. Silver may be the little brother, but gold remains the elder.
Added to this is a tangible advantage: as investment gold, the Purest Maple Leaf is exempt from VAT under § 25c UStG. After a holding period of one year, any capital gains are tax-free. Canadian precision, five-nines purity, and a mintage of just 900 pieces make this ounce an extraordinary piece for investors and collectors alike.
