The new special edition of the Gold Krugerrand featuring the Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond is an extraordinary tribute to the origins of South African gold coins, uniting two icons of numismatic history. This world premiere combines the globally celebrated Krugerrand with a striking detail: the Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond – the "original form" of the Krugerrand. This unique edition is available exclusively at Kettner Edelmetalle!

The Burgers Pond – the original form of the world-famous Krugerrand

The Burgers Pond from the former Transvaal Republic marks the first attempt to mint South African gold into its own currency, laying the foundation for what would later become known worldwide as the Krugerrand. The coin, minted in 1874, is closely tied to South Africa's history and identity, as it was the first coin made from the country's rich gold deposits. This makes the Burgers Pond a direct predecessor of the Krugerrand, which was introduced in 1967 as a symbol of South Africa's gold market.

The obverse of the Burgers Pond features the portrait of Thomas François Burgers, the fourth president of the Transvaal Republic, while the reverse displays the national coat of arms. President Burgers had the visionary plan to create a national coin from the gold of his homeland – a bold step that laid the groundwork for the later success story of the Krugerrand. Yet while the Burgers Pond went down in history as the first South African gold coin, its journey was anything but easy.

In 1873, Burgers, without consulting his own parliament, sent 300 ounces of gold to London to have coins minted modeled on the English pound. The firm of Ralph Heaton and Sons in Birmingham ultimately struck 837 coins. However, when Burgers presented them to the Volksraad, the parliament of the Transvaal Republic, the coin was indignantly rejected. It never entered official circulation, and its commercial concept failed. Instead, most Burgers Ponds were used as jewelry or keepsakes – many of which were lost or destroyed over time.

Although the Burgers Pond failed to fulfill its economic role, it later became a numismatic treasure. With the discovery of the coin's numismatic value in the late 19th century, a passion began for the few remaining specimens that continues to this day. Particularly interesting is the fact that there are two variants of the coin – one with a fine beard and one with a coarse beard in Burgers' portrait.

While the Burgers Pond itself never entered circulation, it marked the beginning of a significant tradition of South African gold coins. Its production paved the way for the Krugerrand, which, nearly 100 years later in a completely different era, would become a worldwide symbol of the South African gold market. Thus, the Burgers Pond is not only a rare collector's item but also a historical testament reflecting the origin of the Krugerrand – the first vision of a coin made from the gold of the land once known as Transvaal.

Unique special edition – A must for every collector

In commemoration of this heritage, this special edition is strictly limited and impressively combines tradition and modernity. As usual, the obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the distinctive Privy Mark of the Burgers Pond is subtly integrated. This coin thus honors not only South Africa's history but also the transition from the first South African gold coin to the legendary Krugerrand series – a connection between two numismatic legends!

With a mintage of only 30 pieces worldwide, this coin is an absolute highlight for every collector and investor. The combination of historical significance and the highest minting quality "Proof" (PP) makes this gold coin a true treasure. The coin is delivered in an elegant case, making it a perfect gift for special occasions as well.
