Our own minting shows the dragon’s head from the front, with mane and scales, dainty on 1/200 ounce of gold.

From the water into the clouds

It lives in the water and rises into the clouds.

Dragons have appeared in Chinese art since Neolithic times. No later than the Han dynasty, from 206 BC to AD 220, they were regarded as beings of water: they live in rivers and seas, fly up into the clouds, govern the weather and bring the life-giving rain.

This is how old books tell it: the dragon’s breath becomes clouds, and the clouds become rain or lightning. In winter it sleeps beneath rivers and ponds, in the first month of spring it rises, and then it thunders, and rain falls.

In China it stands for the beneficence of heaven. The dragons of Europe are mostly winged and breathe fire, while in East Asia the dragon is regarded as a benevolent being, usually without any wings.

“Above all things the dragon in China is a rain-maker.”
Penn Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, 1934

A dragon made of many animals

The antlers of the stag, the scales of the carp.

According to old tradition, the dragon is made up of parts of many animals: the antlers of the stag, the scales of the carp, the claws of the eagle and the body of the snake. Learned Chinese books also name whiskers at the mouth and a luminous pearl beneath the chin.

The magnifying glass reveals how finely the design is struck here.

The legend of the Dragon Gate

The carp, which becomes a dragon.

A legend tells of the Yellow River: a carp that swims upstream through the Dragon Gate becomes a dragon.

In China the image stood for passing the civil service examination. On a Yuan dynasty inkstone in the Metropolitan Museum, the grinding surface and the ink well lie between carp and dragon; their diligent use might well decide success.

The phoenix

Dragon and phoenix, emperor and empress.

On a porcelain plate of the Wanli period in the Metropolitan Museum, the five-clawed dragon is the emblem of the emperor. At its side appears the phoenix, which often stands for the empress.

On a wedding robe from the 1930s in the Victoria and Albert Museum, too, dragon and phoenix form the basic pattern, as the male and female elements of marriage. By tradition, the bride was “empress of the day.”

More companions of the dragon

The emblem of the emperor

From the waves at the hem to the pearl.

An imperial robe of yellow silk from the Qianlong period, shown at the Palace Museum in Beijing in 2019, follows the usual arrangement from bottom to top: water lines form the waves of the ocean, from them rises Mount Kunlun, and at chest height the five-clawed dragon chases the flaming pearl.

The claws mattered: the five-clawed dragon, long, was distinguished from the four-clawed one, mang, which stood for lower ranks.

“Only the emperor and empress were allowed to wear bright yellow.”
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, on a dragon robe of the 18th century

The craft

There are gold coins that you simply buy – and those you secure before they're sold out. The 1/200 oz Gold Chinese Dragon 2026 clearly belongs to the second category. Packed into just 14 millimetres in diameter is a complete miniature work of art made of pure fine gold, issued by the Republic of Liberia and minted exclusively for Kettner Edelmetalle. Small in size, big in impact.

A dragon that makes an impression

The obverse shows the dragon's head in a gripping frontal view: a wide-open jaw, sharp fangs, watchful eyes and two striking horns. A flowing mane of beard and whiskers frames the face, while the scale-covered body winds around the design on either side. Every single scale appears individually worked out. The dark background creates a strong contrast to the golden relief – lending depth and an almost three-dimensional feel. At the bottom edge, the inscription "1/200 OZ 9999 FINE GOLD 2026" confirms the weight and fineness of the coin.

The reverse continues the story

On the reverse, the dragon winds majestically around a traditional Chinese pagoda landscape: multi-storey temples, curved bridges, intricate architectural details. The legend "Republic of Liberia" and the face value "25 Dollars" complete the picture. In Asian culture, the dragon has stood for strength, power and good fortune for thousands of years – a design with meaning that goes far beyond mere decoration.

Above all: genuine investment gold

As artful as the design may be – the dragon provides the personal touch, while the metal provides the real substance. Gold is the world's oldest currency, has never had a value of zero, and has been valued as a reliable store of value for over 6,000 years. The value of this coin is based primarily on its fine gold content and moves in line with the gold price. Those who regularly acquire small amounts build up, step by step over the years, considerable wealth in physical form – with the small denomination noticeably lowering the entry threshold.

  • Preservation of value: gold preserves purchasing power and can be passed down through generations
  • Liquid & tradable: recognised worldwide, resalable at any time and easily converted into cash
  • Scarce commodity: the limited supply makes gold a proven inflation hedge and also serves many as crisis protection
  • Tax aspect: profits from the sale of physical gold are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year
Gold has been shining for thousands of years – and it will never lose its shine. It is precisely this permanence that makes every gram of fine gold a solid building block for long-term wealth accumulation.

Proof (PP) minting quality

This gold coin is minted in the highest possible quality level, Proof. Mirror-polished surfaces meet a frosted background – the unmistakable hallmark of PP quality. Even on the tiny 14 mm surface, every detail stands out razor-sharp as a result, from the whiskers to individual scales. The coin is delivered in an elaborately designed coin card in deep red and gold featuring a dragon and pagoda motif, which protects the fine gold and presents it to great effect.

Strictly limited – part of the "Chinese Mythical Creatures" series

With a worldwide mintage of only 5,000 pieces, this issue is a genuine rarity. Experience shows that such limited mintages sell out quickly, and it is precisely this strict limitation that underpins an appreciation potential that can exceed the pure material value – though concrete price developments can, of course, never be guaranteed. Chinese dragons are among the most sought-after designs on gold coins in any case; compared to larger dragon issues, this 1/200 oz piece scores with its low capital outlay while still offering full fine gold quality. The coin joins the "Chinese Mythical Creatures" series, which is already attracting keen interest.

For investors – and as a gold gift

The 1/200 oz Gold Chinese Dragon 2026 is aimed at anyone who wants to own physical gold in a small, manageable denomination – whether as an entry point into gold investment or as a smart addition to an existing holding. It also makes an impressive gift: for a birthday, christening or Chinese New Year, you're not just giving a souvenir here, but full-fledged investment gold whose value tracks the gold price. Despite the personal occasion, what you're acquiring is minted fine gold – arguably the most beautiful way to pass on genuine value along with a touch of Far Eastern symbolism.
