The Royal Mint

Ten Britannias in a coin tube.

Coin tube with a yellow lid, a stack of gold coins and a single Britannia beside it

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint. Today’s gold Britannia bears his design as well.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

Since the 2021 issue

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

200 times narrower than a hair

According to The Royal Mint, this is how narrow the indentations are that a picosecond laser makes for the waves.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1987

    The Britannia in gold

Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson approves a new 100-pound gold coin. It is named after Britannia and initially struck in 22-carat gold.

  4. 2013

    In 24-carat gold

Since then, the gold Britannia has been struck in 24-carat gold.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine gold.

  • fineness 999.9
  • 22 mm
  • face value 25 pounds

Fineness, diameter and face value per coin as stated by The Royal Mint.

10 x 1/4 oz Gold Britannia 2026 – The Brilliant Investor Package from the Kingdom

Ten radiant quarter ounces, united in a practical coin tube – the bundle 10 x 1/4 oz Gold Britannia 2026 is a prime example of how classic elegance and modern investment strategy can be combined in a single product. Struck in 2026 by the world-famous Royal Mint, these ten coins unite British minting artistry with the timeless fascination of the yellow metal.

  • Investment objective: Bullion coin offering wealth preservation, inflation hedge and convenient crisis protection in small denominations of 1/4 oz.
  • Design: Britannia – the personification of the British people – depicted with a Corinthian helmet, shield and trident, portrayed with both power and grace.
  • Material / Fineness: Purest fine gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000 – it hardly gets any purer.
  • Manufacturer: The British Royal Mint, one of the oldest and most renowned mints in the world.
  • Country of origin: Great Britain, the home of the Crown and Britannia.
  • Packaging: Practical coin tube with the Royal Mint emblem on the gold-coloured lid.
  • Total weight: 77.8 g of fine gold, distributed across ten individual coins.

The Design – Britannia in a New Light

Anyone who has ever held a Britannia in their hands immediately understands why this series is so sought after worldwide. The proud warrior stands powerfully in the wind, her robes billowing, the trident pointing upward, and the protective shield bearing the Union Jack resting firmly at her side. Each of the ten coins displays this iconic image in the finest relief engraving – including the integrated security features that the Royal Mint has been incorporating into the surface for several years: wave-like structures in the background that seem to come alive when the coin is tilted.

"The Britannia is more than just a bullion coin – it is a piece of British identity, captured in the purest fine gold."

Material and Fineness – 999.9/1,000 Pure Confidence

Each of the ten Britannias is made from high-purity gold with a fineness of 999.9/1,000. This makes the series one of the purest bullion coins in the world. Especially in turbulent times, it becomes clear why gold has been regarded as a stable store of value for over 6,000 years: it possesses an intrinsic value that exists independently of governments, central banks and printed paper money. Gold has never been worth zero – and never will be.

Why Specifically the Bundle of Ten Quarter Ounces?

The 1/4 oz format represents the wisely chosen middle ground for many investors. Smaller than the full ounce, therefore more easily divisible, more flexibly deployable – and at the same time substantial enough to represent genuine value. In times when flexibility matters, this format plays all its trump cards.

  1. Divisibility: Ten individual coins mean ten independent units of value.
  2. Convenience: Small denomination, great impact – ideal for gifting, inheritance or gradual selling.
  3. Worldwide acceptance: The Britannia is one of the most recognised gold coins in the world.
  4. Tax advantage: Investment gold is exempt from VAT (Value Added Tax) in Germany, and after a holding period of at least one year, capital gains are generally tax-free.

The Coin Tube – Small Detail, Big Impact

The bundle is delivered in the original Royal Mint coin tube. This robust plastic tube reliably protects the ten coins from scratches, dust and mechanical damage. The gold-coloured lid bears the coat of arms emblem of the Royal Mint, making the tube a small collector's item in its own right. Those planning to store additional gold coins will find the tube an ideal storage solution for the home safe.

Britannia in Comparison – How Does It Hold Up Against Other Classics?

Alongside the Krugerrand, Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic, the Britannia plays in the top league of bullion coins. While the Krugerrand traditionally comes in 22 carats (916.7/1,000), the Britannia impresses with its higher fineness of 999.9/1,000 – a clear advantage for purists. Compared to the Maple Leaf, it scores with its European connection and a more powerful design. In short: the Britannia offers an excellent combination of purity, minting quality and international liquidity.

Who Is This Investor Package Suited For?
