The Royal Mint

30 Britannias in gold.

Blue velvet pouch, a Britannia in gold in front of it

Philip Nathan’s Britannia

The sculptor created her for a new bullion coin from The Royal Mint. Today’s gold Britannia bears his design as well.

She wears a Corinthian helmet with a high crest, while her hair and robes flow to the left.

  1. The trident

She holds it with her arm outstretched. It stands for her connection with the sea.

  2. The shield

It bears the Union Flag and stands for protection.

  3. The olive branch

She holds it above the shield. It stands for peace.

Meaning as given by The Royal Mint, details from a product photo.

Four features you can see in the light

Turn the coin in the light and you can check that it is genuine. According to The Royal Mint, this makes the Britannia one of the most visually secure bullion coins in the world.

  • The latent image

At the bottom left, below the robes, it alternates between a trident and a padlock depending on the viewing angle.

  • The micro-text

DECUS ET TUTAMEN, an ornament and a safeguard, runs around the figure. The words already appeared on the edge of English coins in the 17th century.

  • The waves

When the coin is turned, waves seem to move behind the figure. To create them, a picosecond laser makes indentations which, according to The Royal Mint, are 200 times narrower than a human hair.

  • The lines in the shield

Fine, smooth lines trace the light and dark tones of the flag.

From Hadrian to Charles III

  1. around119

    On Roman coins

Under Emperor Hadrian, Britannia appears on a coin for the first time: a woman on rocks, with a spear and a shield, and below her the word BRITANNIA.

  2. 1672

    Back on English coins

She returns on England’s first official copper coins, the halfpenny and the farthing, under Charles II. Tradition has it that Frances Stuart, a lady of the court, sat as her model.

  3. 1987

    The Britannia in gold

Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson approves a new 100-pound gold coin. It is named after Britannia and initially struck in 22-carat gold.

  4. 2013

    In 24-carat gold

Since then, the gold Britannia has been struck in 24-carat gold.

  5. 2023

    The King’s portrait

According to The Royal Mint, the 2023 Britannia is the world’s first bullion coin to bear the official portrait of King Charles III. The sculptor Martin Jennings called it his smallest work.

The Royal Mint in Wales

Since 1975, The Royal Mint has struck coins only in Llantrisant in South Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had opened the first phase of the site on 17 December 1968.

By its own account, it looks back on a history of more than 1,100 years.

Every year, an independent jury tests the weight and fineness of its coins at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London, during the Trial of the Pyx.

“Steadfast in the eye of the storm.”

This is how The Royal Mint describes its Britannia.

In fine gold.

  • fineness 999.9
  • 16.5 mm
  • face value 10 pounds

The Britannia – A Symbol of Strength and Permanence

The Royal Mint has been minting this iconic coin series since 1987. What makes it so special? The figure of Britannia herself. She stands majestically, surrounded by stylized waves, trident firmly in hand. Her shield bears the Union Jack – a powerful emblem of British identity. The Corinthian helmet lends her a timeless dignity reminiscent of ancient goddesses.

The attention to detail is simply breathtaking. Each individual coin displays the finest relief work, bringing Britannia's flowing robe to life. The reeded edge elegantly frames the artwork and underscores the craftsmanship's perfection.

State-of-the-Art Security Features for Your Investment

Since 2020, the Royal Mint has integrated innovative security elements that make these gold coins among the most counterfeit-resistant in the world:

  1. A fascinating latent image element shows either a padlock or a trident, depending on the viewing angle
  2. The wave-like background with its ridged structure is nearly impossible to replicate
  3. The Latin micro-text "DECUS ET TUTAMEN" – translated as "an ornament and a safeguard" – is hidden among the design elements

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. For over 6,000 years it has preserved its value – while countless paper currencies have come and gone.

Tax Advantages and Practical Aspects

As an investment product, these gold coins enjoy a decisive advantage: they are exempt from VAT. Even better? With a holding period of at least one year, profits from the sale are generally tax-free. This makes the Britannia an extremely attractive building block for safeguarding your wealth.

The 1/10 oz denomination offers maximum flexibility. Whether you want to give individual coins as gifts, sell them gradually, or use them as a means of exchange – this convenient size opens up every possibility. The face value of 10 GBP underscores its official status as legal tender.

Elegant Packaging in a Royal Blue Velvet Pouch

Your 30 Britannia coins are delivered stylishly in a high-quality velvet pouch. The royal blue velour material with a practical drawstring not only protects your treasures – it also makes them a perfect gift. Whether for a christening, an anniversary, or as a cornerstone for the next generation's retirement planning.

The obverse, incidentally, features the portrait of King Charles III with the inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 10 POUNDS". A piece of living history that you hold in your hands.

Why Invest in Gold Right Now?

In times of economic uncertainty, savvy investors seek stability. Gold has intrinsic value – it can never fall to zero. While central banks can print fiat money at will, the supply of gold remains limited. It is precisely this scarcity that secures long-term value stability.

Interestingly, the world's largest gold holders are the central banks themselves. What does that tell us? Even the guardians of paper money trust in the permanence of the yellow precious metal. With this bundle of 30 Britannia coins, you secure a piece of this timeless security – struck with British precision and packaged with loving attention to detail.
