The obverse
A wish from the White House
It all began with a dinner at the White House. Theodore Roosevelt wanted a coin that would compare in beauty and relief with the old Greek coins. It was his “pet crime”, as he called it, recalled Henry Hering, assistant to the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
In Saint-Gaudens’ own words: “My idea is to make it a living thing and typical of progress.” Owing to Saint-Gaudens’ ill health, Hering executed the coin under his direction, from his designs. Saint-Gaudens died on 3 August 1907, before the coin went into circulation.
Torch, olive branch and the morning of the Republic
Instead of a head or a seated goddess, Saint-Gaudens shows the full figure in stride, the torch in her right hand, the olive branch in her left. The Capitol rises at the lower left, and behind her the rays of the sun fan out. The Smithsonian Institution calls torch and branch “offerings of freedom and peace” and sees in the figure “the morning of the Republic, full of possibilities and hope”.
Since 1986, the gold American Eagle has carried a rendition of this Liberty. In 2021, the United States Mint used historical assets such as the original bronze cast to reflect Saint-Gaudens’ vision more closely, and modified the Capitol, stars, torch and sun rays in the process. The coins of 2026 also carry this version.

The reverse
Since 2021 the portrait of an eagle

In 2021, to mark the 35th anniversary of the programme, the United States Mint updated the designs of the American Eagle. Since then, the reverse of the gold coin has shown the portrait of an eagle, designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon. Their initials JN and RG stand beside the eagle.
For 35 years, from 1986 to 2021, an eagle carrying an olive branch flew here above the nest in which the female sat with the hatchlings. That is how the law of 1985 describes it, and the design is by the sculptor Miley Busiek.
The coin in detail
Struck under a law of 1985
The basis is the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 17 December 1985. The coins could not be issued before 1 October 1986.
The law requires the gold to be bought from deposits in the United States, within one year after it was mined. In the absence of available supplies of such gold, gold from reserves held by the United States may be used. Weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the United States Government, according to the United States Mint.
Every coin bears its face value: 50, 25, 10 or 5 dollars, depending on its size.

Above the majestic eagle's head are the meaningful words "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" – a testament to the core values of the American nation.
On the obverse, we encounter Lady Liberty in all her splendor. The goddess of liberty, long a symbol of American ideals, is accompanied by the year of issue 2026. This iconic depiction makes each individual coin a small work of art.

Gold – The Ultimate Wealth Protection for 6,000 Years
While paper money comes and goes, gold has survived every currency crisis in human history. It is no coincidence that the world's largest gold holders are the central banks themselves. They know: gold retains its intrinsic value when fiat currencies falter.
The American Eagle combines the best of both worlds: the intrinsic value of the precious metal and the reputation of one of the world's most respected mints. The United States Mint not only guarantees weight and fineness but also gives the coin its unmistakable identity.
Perfect for Your Investment Strategy
The compact 1/4 oz denomination makes this gold coin particularly flexible. It is ideally suited for:
- Gradual wealth building with manageable amounts
- Diversifying your precious metals portfolio
- Gifting on special occasions

Compared to larger gold coins, the quarter coin offers the advantage of better tradability. While a full ounce is often too valuable for everyday transactions, the smaller denomination allows for more flexibility when selling or trading.
