The New Year's Lucky Penny: Six Lucky Charms Made of Copper and Gold for the New Year
A penny in your wallet so your money never runs out in the new year – few New Year's traditions are as down-to-earth and endearing as this one. Our set takes this idea literally and elevates it to a whole new level. Instead of a single piece of copper, you receive three solid penny coins struck in 999 fine copper along with three small lucky charms made of real fine gold. Together, the set weighs in at a fine weight of 218.91 g, of which around 1.19 g is pure gold.
Sounds like a lot? It is. And it's a gift that won't disappear into a drawer once the new year has begun.

Three Pennies, Three Faces
Almost everyone in Germany knows this design. A large "1" between two ears of wheat, with the word PFENNIG beneath – that's what the smallest coin of the D-Mark looked like. The design is by Adolf Jäger. From 1948/49, the Bank deutscher Länder put this penny into circulation, a tiny copper-plated steel piece measuring 16.5 mm and weighing 2 grams. It jingled in pockets and piggy banks right up until the turn of the year 2001/2002.
The 2026 reissue reverses the scale. The reverse side features the oak branch with the inscription "BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER", complemented by the national emblem of Liberia and the inscription "CU 999 FEINKUPFER". The coins are issued by the Republic of Liberia with a face value of 1 Dollar.
Proof: The Mirror Shine
On the 1 oz penny in Proof quality, the matte relief stands out vividly against the mirrored background. The warm copper tone further enhances this contrast – a true showpiece for the display case.
Antique Finish: Patina with Character
The two Antique Finish editions have a completely different look. The mint artificially ages their surface, dark shading gathers in the recesses while the raised areas glow reddish. No two pieces are exactly alike. The 5 oz penny, with its 65 millimeters, is the secret star of the set – a hefty copper giant, strictly limited to just 1,000 pieces worldwide.
Gold as a Lucky Charm: Small, Genuine, Enduring
Copper tells the story. Gold provides the substance. The three gold components of the set are made of real fine gold, whose value is tied to the gold price. Clover, ladybug, horseshoe: these lucky symbols already appeared on New Year's cards around 1900 – here they are cast in gold.
The Gold Happy New Year Coin is among the smallest gold coins in existence. The rectangular piece bears the national emblem of the Republic of Chad and comes in a coincard featuring champagne glasses and golden fireworks; it was struck by Valcambi. The Lucky Ladybug combines two classic lucky symbols at once – a ladybug on a four-leaf clover – in Proof quality with a mintage of only 5,000 pieces. And the 1g Gold Bar "Good Luck" comes from Valcambi in Balerna, Ticino, a Swiss refinery founded in 1961 that enjoys worldwide trust as an LBMA Good Delivery refinery.
Gold is humanity's oldest currency and has outlived all others. Those who give gold at the turn of the year are giving a piece of permanence.
Set or Individual Purchase? An Honest Comparison
Of course, each of these coins can also be purchased individually. Anyone focused solely on the lowest possible premium per gram of fine gold would be better off choosing larger bars or classic bullion coins. The New Year's Lucky Penny follows a different idea: it combines the joy of collecting with a gold investment in one cohesive package. Compared to an ordinary lucky penny or lucky cent from your spare change, the differences are obvious.
- Real metal instead of spare change: three fine copper coins and three fine gold products instead of plated steel
- Limited mintages: 1,000, 2,500 and 5,000 pieces for the pennies, 5,000 for the Lucky Ladybug
- Value preservation in gold: fine gold has been regarded for thousands of years as a hedge against inflation and loss of purchasing power
- Ready to gift: coincards and the blister card make every gold piece a presentable gift
The copper coins are deliberately designed as collector's items, where the design, format, and limited mintage take center stage. The gold ensures the preservation of value.
Who This Set Is Perfect For
For anyone who wants to give more at New Year's than a marzipan lucky pig and chimney sweep. For D-Mark nostalgics who want to hold the penny in oversized form. For collectors of copper coins with small mintages. And for anyone who wants to take their first step into physical gold with a wink, gram by gram and year by year. This lucky set also makes a fine impression as a wedding or birth gift. A talisman for the new year that remains long after the fireworks have faded.
