Football Gold: Three World Cup Highlights in One Fine Gold Set

Rome, 8 July 1990. Andreas Brehme converts the penalty, Germany becomes world champion for the third time. Sixteen years later, the whole country celebrates its summer fairy tale in its own stadiums. And in 2026, FIFA writes history once again: for the first time three hosts, for the first time 48 teams. The collection "Football Gold – The German World Cup Collection" captures these moments – not on paper, but in real gold. The centrepiece is the official commemorative coin of the Federal Republic of Germany with a face value of 100 euro for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, one of the best-known German euro gold coins of all. It is accompanied by a trophy gold coin for the 2026 World Cup and two fine miniatures.

What's included in the set

  • 1 x 1/2 ounce gold 100 euro 2005 "2006 FIFA World Cup" – 15.55 g fine gold, 999.9/1,000, Brilliant Uncirculated (BU)
  • 1 x 1 g gold FIFA World Cup Trophy 2026 – 999.9/1,000 fine gold, Proof, mintage of 2,026 pieces
  • 1 x Gold Football World Champion 1990 coin – 1/1,000 ounce (approx. 0.03 g), 999/1,000 fine gold
  • 1 x Gold football coin "One World One Game" – 1/1,000 ounce (approx. 0.03 g), 999/1,000 fine gold, mintage of 50,000 pieces

Together this amounts to 16.61 g of gold – spread across four coinages, each telling its own story.

The centrepiece: 100 euro gold for the World Cup on home soil

On 4 October 2005, the half ounce coin for the home World Cup was issued. The obverse, designed by Heinz Hoyer, shows a football stadium from a bird's-eye view: the spectator stands circle around the pitch, with the ball lying in the centre circle. The inscription reads "FIFA FUSSBALL-WELTMEISTERSCHAFT · DEUTSCHLAND 2006". On the reverse, the federal eagle is enthroned, based on a design by Erich Ott, surrounded by twelve stars, the lettering "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND", the year of issue 2005, the mint mark and the face value "100 EURO".

This 100 euro gold coin, with a diameter of 28 mm, was minted at all five German state mints – Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J) – with 70,000 pieces each, totalling 350,000 pieces. As legal tender made of 999.9 fine gold, it belongs to the series of German gold euro coins. In its early years, the series primarily honoured UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Quedlinburg, Bamberg or Weimar. The 2005 issue, by contrast, deliberately focused on sport – which is exactly what makes it a favourite among many collectors to this day.

2026 FIFA World Cup Trophy: One gram of gold in trophy form

The second coin is a true eye-catcher. As a so-called shaped coin, it recreates the silhouette of the world's most famous trophy: two figures lifting the globe aloft, with the continents outlined upon it. On the curved base, a holographic, iridescent colour finish shimmers above the raised lettering "FIFA WORLD CUP". The reverse shows the portrait of King Charles III, the year 2026, the issuing country "Solomon Islands", as well as the details 1 g, $10 and Au 9999. The base is marked with a distinctive "26".

This officially licensed FIFA product was issued for the Solomon Islands with a face value of 10 dollars, struck in Proof quality and limited worldwide to a symbolic 2,026 pieces. It commemorates the tournament that was held in three countries for the first time – the USA, Canada and Mexico. In the final in New York/New Jersey, Spain crowned themselves world champions with a 1:0 win over Argentina.

Two miniatures with great memories

Football World Champion 1990

The small rectangular coin shows two players in a tackle, framed like a film strip, with the lettering "FUSSBALLWELTMEISTER 1990" below. It was struck by the Swiss mint Valcambi and issued by the Republic of Chad with a face value of 3,000 CFA francs. It is delivered in a capsule inside a case.

"One World One Game"

A three-dimensionally embossed football with a honeycomb pattern, 16 mm in diameter, also by Valcambi. This gold coin was issued by the Republic of Gabon with a face value of 1,000 CFA francs, with mintage limited to 50,000 pieces. The blister card shows a stadium scene at sunset with cheering fans.

Set or single coin? An honest comparison

Anyone focused solely on getting as much gold as possible per euro should opt for a single half ounce coin such as the Krugerrand or another German gold euro. This set deliberately pursues a different approach.

  • Thematic coherence: Three tournaments, four coinages – a story that practically tells itself.
  • Solid foundation: With 15.55 g of fine gold, the 100 euro gold coin carries the lion's share of the material value.
  • Collector's appeal: Limited mintages of 2,026 and 50,000 pieces, as well as the Proof quality, specifically appeal to numismatists.
  • Good to know: Miniature coins and shaped coins carry a higher premium per gram than classic bullion coins. In return, they offer design and rarity that a pure bullion coin cannot provide.

As a gift for football fans, the collection is simply ideal – for a birthday, an anniversary, or just because a piece of World Cup history in gold lasts longer than any jersey in the wardrobe.

Gold: The world's oldest store of value

Gold is humanity's oldest currency. It has outlasted empires, paper money systems and currency reforms, and has never had a value of zero. As a physical tangible asset, it is regarded as a proven hedge against inflation and a reliable form of crisis protection in uncertain times. Globally recognised and liquid, gold can be sold again at any time if needed – even in small quantities. Under current German law, profits from the sale of physical gold are also tax-free after a holding period of more than one year.

Trophies get passed on, records fall. Gold remains – and with it, the memory of the great moments of German football.

For investors with a passion for sport, as well as for collectors seeking something special: with "Football Gold – The German World Cup Collection", you secure four gold coins that combine sporting history and lasting value in one set.
