The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 10 years of the silver Krugerrand.
The first silver Krugerrand appeared in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series. 10 years later it carries a mark of its own above the springbok’s back.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

Some coins you buy. Others you collect because they tell a chapter of history. The 2 oz silver Krugerrand 2027 PP clearly belongs to the latter category. It celebrates a decade in which the legendary Krugerrand family has also secured a firm place among silver coins. With a mintage of only 10,000 pieces and the exclusive anniversary privy mark, this edition is a true rarity for discerning collectors and investors.
Ten Years of the Silver Krugerrand: An Anniversary with History
It all began in 2017. That year, the gold Krugerrand turned 50, and to mark the occasion, the South African Mint struck a Krugerrand in fine silver for the first time. What was intended as a birthday gift quickly developed into one of the most sought-after silver coins worldwide. Since 2020, the Krugerrand has additionally been issued in an impressive 2-ounce Proof version, also known internationally as "Proof."
In 2027, the circle closes twice over. Ten years of the silver Krugerrand coincide with the 60th anniversary of the gold classic. This is precisely what the small, finely crafted privy mark to the left above the Springbok commemorates: within the circle are the years "2017 • 2027", in the center the striking "10", and below it the inscription "Year Anniversary". A subtle detail, yet exactly the feature that distinguishes this edition from the regular annual issue.
Proof Quality: Mirror Finish Down to the Finest Line
For a coin in Proof quality, the blanks are carefully prepared and struck multiple times with polished dies. The result is immediately visible. A deep, mirrored coin field makes the frosted relief appear almost three-dimensional. The Springbok's fur and horns, Paul Kruger's full beard, every fold of his frock coat: everything appears razor-sharp. With a diameter of 50.00 mm, the coin offers ample stage for this. Crafted with such attention to detail, it deserves a place of honor in any collection.
Springbok and Paul Kruger: Two Icons of South Africa
The portrait of Paul Kruger, framed by "SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA", has been the face of the series since 1967. Kruger led the South African Republic from 1882 to 1902 and, together with the Rand currency, gave the coin its name. On the reverse, the Springbok leaps through the steppe landscape, a design by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials "CLS" can be found to the right of the hooves. At the top, large letters spell out "KRUGERRAND", while the inscription below, "FYNSILWER 2 OZ FINE SILVER R2", states the weight, fineness, and the face value of 2 Rand.
Why Silver? Values That Outlast Generations
Silver has accompanied humanity for thousands of years as a monetary metal, medium of exchange, and symbol of prosperity. Unlike paper money, it possesses an intrinsic value that does not depend on trust in governments. What makes this precious metal so exciting today:
- Limited supply meets growing demand from electronics, solar, and medical technology
- A globally traded commodity with high liquidity that can easily be converted back into cash
- Durable and resilient: silver retains its physical properties over decades
- A proven safeguard in times of political and economic uncertainty
- Affordable compared to gold, making it ideal for gradual wealth building
- Tax advantage in Germany: profits from sales are generally tax-free after a holding period of more than one year
This makes silver an excellent choice for long-term provision that can be passed down from generation to generation. And as a Krugerrand in Proof quality, this legacy is also a joy to behold.
2 oz, 1 oz, or Bullion? A Direct Comparison
The classic 1 oz silver Krugerrand measures 38.725 mm. The 2 oz edition, at 50 mm, is noticeably larger and presents the design and privy mark far more impressively, without being as massive as the 5 oz variant at 64 mm. Those who buy ounces of silver primarily by weight will opt for the Brilliant Uncirculated bullion version at a modest premium. Those seeking a strictly limited anniversary edition with collector's value, however, will find this coin the better fit. The added exclusivity comes at a price above the pure metal value. In return, you receive fine metal, a very low mintage, and a historic occasion combined in a single coin.
Securely Packaged, Clearly Documented
Delivery comes in a high-quality case that reliably protects the sensitive surface. A certificate of authenticity accompanies each piece, documenting its origin and issue, a detail that collectors greatly appreciate when it comes to a later resale.
Ten years of the silver Krugerrand, 60 years of Krugerrand legend, and only 10,000 pieces worldwide: secure this piece of South African coin history while it is still available.
