The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

60 Years of the Krugerrand: The Anniversary Half Ounce in Proof

  • Minting quality: The highest finishing level, Proof (PP), with a mirrored field and matte relief
  • Material / fineness: 22-carat gold with a fineness of 916.67/1,000 – the copper content lends the typical rose-gold shimmer and makes the surface noticeably more resistant
  • Strictly limited: Only 2,000 pieces minted worldwide
  • Growth potential: Very high appreciation potential due to the strict limitation and strong demand for the anniversary
  • Rarity: A genuine rarity and sought-after collector's coin for the 60th anniversary
  • Special feature: Anniversary edition of the world's most popular bullion coin – enhanced with the privy mark "1967–2027 · 60 Year Anniversary"
  • Design: Obverse features Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1882–1902; reverse shows the leaping Springbok, South Africa's national animal
  • Namesakes: Paul Kruger and the Rand, South Africa's legal tender since 1961
  • Investment purpose: Wealth preservation, inflation hedge, and crisis protection
  • Manufacturer: Minted by the South African Mint – the Krugerrand brand belongs to the renowned Rand Refinery
  • Country of origin: South Africa, home of the Krugerrand since 1967

On July 3, 1967, South Africa began a success story that continues to this day. That year, the first gold Krugerrand was minted – the coin regarded as the forefather of all modern bullion coins. In 2027, it turns 60. For this milestone birthday, the South African Mint is releasing a half ounce in Proof, whose Springbok side bears a specially designed anniversary privy mark. The mintage? Just 2,000 pieces.

Six Decades of the Krugerrand – An Anniversary with Rarity Value

Hardly any coin has shaped the precious metals market as much. Around 1980, the Krugerrand accounted for more than 90 percent of global trade in gold coins. That same year, South Africa introduced fractional denominations of 1/2, 1/4, and 1/10 ounce, making the coin accessible to smaller budgets as well – a step many mints later followed.

The series traditionally celebrates milestone anniversaries with privy marks. Already for the 50th anniversary in 2017, editions featuring a small "50" were released, which today are considered highly sought-after pieces in many collections. The 2027 anniversary edition seamlessly continues this tradition. Anyone assembling Krugerrand year sets will find here a historical document capturing a true milestone in the history of this icon.

Design and Privy Mark in Detail

Obverse: Paul Kruger

The portrait shows Paul Kruger in profile, framed by the bilingual inscription "SUID-AFRIKA · SOUTH AFRICA." The design originates from Otto Schultz and was already featured on coins of the South African Republic as early as 1892. Full beard, combed-back hair, a serious gaze: an image that has remained unchanged for generations – and precisely for that reason, it carries such strong impact.

Reverse: Springbok with Anniversary Mark

On the value side, the Springbok leaps forward over a suggested landscape with a Protea flower. The design was created by sculptor Coert Steynberg, whose initials can be subtly found at the bottom right; his antelope had already adorned South Africa's five-shilling coins since 1947. To the left of the animal's head sits the circular privy mark bearing the large "60" and the inscription "1967–2027 · 60 Year Anniversary." The design is completed by the legends "1/2 KRUGERRAND" and "FYNGOUD 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD," as well as the split year 20 | 27.

Sixty years, an unchanged design, and a small mark that turns a legend into a rarity for connoisseurs.

Proof: Mirror Shine for Connoisseurs

Proof – known internationally as Proof – is the most demanding minting quality of all. Polished dies and carefully prepared blanks create a mirrored background against which the matte reliefs stand out in sharp relief. Every detail is brought to life, from the president's beard to the Springbok's fur. Connoisseurs also recognize Proof Krugerrands by their denser edge reeding. A high-quality case and a certificate of authenticity protect and document the piece.

Half Ounce, Full Ounce, or Bullion? A Comparison

Anyone looking for a Krugerrand has options. The classic bullion edition stands out for its low premium over the material value, but it comes with no limitation and no special finishing. The 1-ounce version in Proof offers more surface area for the design but requires a significantly higher budget. The half ounce combines the best of both worlds.

With a fine weight of 15.55 g, it contains exactly half an ounce of gold. It also features the same faithful design, the same minting quality, and the same anniversary mark – but with a lighter entry point. Especially among collector's coins with such a strictly limited mintage, a simple rule applies: those who hesitate often search in vain later.

Gold – The World's Oldest Currency

For over 6,000 years, gold has accompanied humanity as a store of value. Already in ancient Egypt, it served as a measure for trade, and kings and emperors wore it as a symbol of their power. Its value has never fallen to zero, because the precious metal possesses an intrinsic value that depends on no central bank. Tellingly, central banks themselves rank among the largest gold holders in the world.

In Germany, gold coins such as the Krugerrand are exempt from VAT. And anyone who wishes to resell their coin after a minimum holding period of one year generally remains exempt from tax on the profit. For collectors, this means their passion rests on a foundation that never loses its shine.
