The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

60 Years of the Krugerrand: The Anniversary Tenth-Ounce in Proof

  • Minting quality: The highest possible minting quality, „Proof“ (PP), with a mirrored background and frosted relief
  • Special feature: The world's most popular bullion coin made of gold, here as an anniversary edition
  • Anniversary: Privy mark „60 Year Anniversary“ with the years 1967 and 2027
  • Mintage: Limited to 4,000 pieces
  • Investment goal: inflation hedge, wealth preservation, and crisis protection
  • Design: Obverse featuring Paul Kruger, President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. Reverse featuring the leaping springbok, South Africa's national animal
  • Named after: Paul Kruger and the Rand, South Africa's legal tender since 1961
  • Material / fineness: 22 karat gold (916.67/1,000). The remainder is copper, which gives the coin its warm reddish tone and an especially durable surface
  • Manufacturer: South African Mint, South Africa's state mint
  • Country of origin: South Africa, where the Krugerrand has been minted since 1967

On July 3, 1967, the first Krugerrand rolled off the minting press. Sixty years later, South Africa celebrates its most famous coin with a special edition: the gold Krugerrand in 1/10 ounce is available for the 2027 year of issue as a Proof edition, bearing a specially created anniversary mark. Collectors receive a small piece of numismatic history. Investors receive one of the world's most renowned gold coins, traded around the globe for decades.

The Anniversary Privy Mark: Small but Unmistakable

The mark is immediately noticeable. Above the springbok's back, to the left of its horned head, sits a round privy mark. In the center is the number 60, above it the years 1967 and 2027, and below it the inscription “Year Anniversary.” Otherwise, the South African Mint keeps to the classic design, and that is exactly what makes it so appealing. The leaping springbok was created by sculptor Coert Steynberg; his initials “CLS” appear in the lower right of the design. The animal first appeared in 1947 on the South African five-shilling coin. The inscription states the denomination and year of issue, as well as the bilingual fineness statement “FYNGOUD 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD.”

The obverse shows Paul Kruger in profile with a full beard, framed by “SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA.” Both designs have remained unchanged since 1967. Hardly any other gold coin achieves this level of instant recognition.

What Makes the Proof Quality So Special?

The PP (Proof) quality is considered the pinnacle of coin minting. For this, the dies are polished, each coin is struck multiple times, and handled with great care. This creates a mirrored coin surface against which the springbok, privy mark, and portrait stand out in striking relief. The coin comes in an elegant case with a certificate of authenticity.

Comparison: Anniversary Edition, Standard Coin, and Alternatives

The tenth-ounce has been part of the Krugerrand family since 1980. In bullion quality, it is minted without any quantity limit, and its price closely follows the gold price. The anniversary edition contains the same amount of fine gold but additionally offers collector's value: limited mintage, privy mark, and mirror finish. For the 50th anniversary in 2017, the 1/10 ounce Proof edition was issued with a mintage of 15,000 pieces. At 4,000 pieces, the 60-year edition is considerably more limited.

And compared to other coins? The Maple Leaf is made of 999.9 fine gold and is therefore softer. The Krugerrand, by contrast, is more resistant to scratches and dents thanks to its alloy. A small gold bar offers pure metal value but no history. A Proof coin naturally carries a higher premium than a bullion coin. In return, it combines precious metal with a genuine piece of numismatic history, and thanks to its small denomination, it remains flexible.

Gold, the World's Oldest Currency

For over 6,000 years, gold has preserved value. Even in ancient Egypt, it served as a benchmark for trade. Later, it adorned crowns and scepters, facilitated the exchange of goods along the Silk Road, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, as the gold standard, formed the foundation of entire currency systems. Its value has never fallen to zero. How could it? Gold has an intrinsic value, it is scarce, and it cannot be multiplied at will. Fiat money, on the other hand, can be created by central banks as needed.

„Gold is money. Everything else is credit.“ – J. P. Morgan, 1912

It is telling that central banks themselves are the world's largest holders of gold. Gold protects against loss of purchasing power, provides stability during political and economic crises, and can be traded worldwide and quickly converted into cash. It is, so to speak, the elder sibling of silver among precious metals. As investment gold, the Krugerrand is exempt from VAT in Germany. Profits from its sale are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year. Gold never loses its shine, neither as a metal nor as wealth that can be passed down through generations.

Who Is This Gold Coin Suitable For?

  • For Krugerrand collectors looking to add the 2027 anniversary year to their series
  • As a valuable gift for a birth, christening, wedding, or milestone birthday
  • For investors wanting to buy gold in a small, flexible denomination
  • For enthusiasts of Proof coins with privy marks and low mintages

Six decades of the Krugerrand in 16.50 millimeters: this anniversary gold coin combines South African tradition with the enduring value of the yellow metal. Secure one of only 4,000 pieces.
