The anniversary mark

Above the springbok’s back: 10 years of the silver Krugerrand.

The first silver Krugerrand appeared in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series. 10 years later it carries a mark of its own above the springbok’s back.

The portrait side

A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.

Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

A milestone birthday that shines. In 2017, the silver Krugerrand was released for the very first time: as an anniversary edition in Proof quality, issued to mark the 50th birthday of its golden predecessor. What was intended as a one-off became a success story. Since 2018, South Africa has also minted the ounce as a classic bullion coin, and it has long since become one of the most well-known silver coins worldwide. With the 2027 vintage, the South African Mint now celebrates ten years of the silver Krugerrand – with its own privy mark, in flawless mirror finish and in a very low mintage.

The Privy Mark: small seal, great significance

Those who look closely will spot it immediately. Below the inscription KRUGERRAND, to the left of the Springbok's horns, sits a small round mint mark: "2017 • 2027" in a wreath, with a distinctive 10 in the center, along with the words "Year Anniversary". Privy marks have a long tradition with the Krugerrand. Since as early as 1997, the mint has featured selected special editions with such marks, and these pieces in particular enjoy a special reputation among collectors. They mark a moment in the history of the series – unmistakable and unrepeatable.

Mirror finish meets matte relief

For this anniversary edition, the South African Mint chose the most demanding production method known in the art of coin minting. The Proof striking process uses highly polished dies and carefully prepared blanks, with each coin typically struck multiple times. The result: mirrored fields from which the frosted portrait of Paul Kruger and the leaping Springbok emerge in almost three-dimensional relief. Connoisseurs refer to this as the cameo effect.

Kruger's flowing beard. The grass of the savanna. The tiny initials CLS of sculptor Coert Steynberg, who designed the Springbok side in 1967. The Kruger portrait itself is based on the work of German medalist Otto Schultz. The inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA" run around the edge, along with "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER R1" on the reverse – bilingual, as befits a genuine Krugerrand.

Ten years of the silver Krugerrand – immortalized in 31.1 grams of fine silver and limited worldwide to 10,000 pieces.

Why this rarity fascinates collectors and investors alike

10,000 coins. For the entire world. With a mintage of only 10,000 pieces, the anniversary vintage is significantly more limited than the first edition from 2017, which was capped at 15,000 pieces in Proof quality. The silver Krugerrand in bullion quality, by contrast, is minted without a fixed ceiling. Anniversary significance, privy mark and strict mintage limitation: this combination makes the coin a true rarity. Editions of this kind are considered especially sought-after among numismatists once they sell out. This results in high value appreciation potential that extends far beyond the pure metal value.

Anniversary Proof or bullion ounce? A direct comparison

  • Bullion Krugerrand and Maple Leaf in Brilliant Uncirculated: close to the silver spot price and ideal for larger quantities, but without limitation and without collector's bonus
  • Anniversary Krugerrand 2027 Proof: higher premium, but featuring mirror finish, certificate of authenticity, privy mark and a fixed mintage
  • Handling: The polished surface is sensitive – it is best to only touch the edge and store it in its case
  • Target audience: For anyone who wants to own precious metal while also owning a special collector's coin

Silver: a store of value with a double foundation

Gold is considered the oldest currency of mankind and has outlasted every paper currency. Silver has stood alongside it for millennia – as a coinage metal, as a medium of trade, as a symbol of prosperity and prestige. Unlike fiat money, whose value rests solely on trust in governments, silver possesses intrinsic value. And today it is more in demand than ever: electronics, photovoltaics and medical technology require large quantities of the white metal, while supply remains limited. This dual demand from industry and investors supports long-term value stability.

In addition, there are tangible everyday advantages. Silver is more affordable than gold, is liquid worldwide and can also be used as a medium of exchange in smaller amounts – a reassuring thought, especially in times of currency instability. It does not age, retains its physical properties over generations, and is therefore excellently suited as retirement provision and as wealth to pass on to children and grandchildren. A tax advantage: in Germany, profits from the sale of silver are generally tax-free after a holding period of at least one year.

An anniversary you can hold in your hands

This silver coin combines everything that makes collectors' hearts beat faster: an iconic design that has captivated people almost unchanged since 1967, a mint steeped in tradition, a unique occasion, and a strictly limited mintage. Delivered in an elegant case with certificate of authenticity, the 1 ounce silver Krugerrand 2027 is also a gift of lasting value – for birthdays, anniversaries, or as the cornerstone of your own Krugerrand collection. Anyone wishing to secure this piece of coin history should not hesitate too long.
