The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 10 years of the silver Krugerrand.
The first silver Krugerrand appeared in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series. 10 years later it carries a mark of its own above the springbok’s back.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

- Mint: South African Mint, partner of the renowned Rand Refinery
- Country of origin: South Africa – home of the Krugerrand since 1967
- Named after: Paul Kruger and the Rand, legal tender of South Africa since 1961
- Investment goal: a rare anniversary edition for collectors, combining numismatic appeal with the material value of fine silver
In 2017, the Krugerrand celebrated its 50th birthday – and appeared in silver for the first time. Ten years later, the South African Mint honours this chapter with its own anniversary coinage. The silver Krugerrand in half-ounce format bears a fine, round privy mark in the 2027 year of issue, inscribed with "2017 • 2027" and "10 Year Anniversary". A double occasion, as 2027 also marks the 60th anniversary of the Krugerrand itself: the first gold coin of this legendary series was minted on 3 July 1967.
A classic in mirror finish: the design in detail
On the obverse, Paul Kruger is shown in left-facing profile, framed by the bilingual legend "SUID-AFRIKA • SOUTH AFRICA" in Afrikaans and English. Beard, hair and suit are rendered down to the finest lines. The reverse shows the famous Springbok design after the original by Coert Steynberg: the antelope bounds in full stride across the South African grassland. Above it arches the inscription "1/2 KRUGERRAND", while the split year of issue "20 · 27" flanks the animal on either side. Below reads "FYNSILWER 1/2 OZ FINE SILVER 50c".
The anniversary privy mark sits directly above the Springbok's back. Small, but instantly recognisable to connoisseurs – it is exactly these details that make an edition for collectors truly distinctive.
Proof: the pinnacle of coin minting
To achieve Proof quality, dies and blanks are elaborately polished, and each coin is struck multiple times at reduced speed. You can see the result immediately: a deep, mirror-like coin field against which the Kruger portrait and Springbok stand out in matte, sculptural relief. This cameo effect gives the half ounce a presence one would hardly expect from a coin just 32.70 mm in diameter.
Why the limited mintage makes the difference
With a mintage of only 20,000 pieces worldwide, this anniversary coin is a true rarity. Bullion Krugerrands in silver are produced in large quantities. This Proof edition, by contrast, is fixed from the outset at a very low mintage, and once sold out, there will be no re-minting. It is precisely this strict limitation, combined with a unique anniversary occasion, that collectors around the world value in such editions.
The denomination is also noteworthy. Within the silver Krugerrand family, the half ounce is a comparatively young size and therefore especially appealing to year-set collectors. A brief comparison:
- 1/2 oz silver Proof (this coin): compact, with anniversary privy mark, ideal as an entry point or as an addition to a year collection
- 1 oz silver Proof: larger diameter of 38.74 mm and double the silver content, limited to 10,000 pieces in the 2026 year of issue
- Silver Krugerrand in Brilliant Uncirculated: a direct route to pure silver weight, but without mirror finish, case or anniversary mark
For those who value minting quality and rarity, the Proof half ounce is the more elegant choice. The price per gram is naturally higher than that of a pure bullion coin. In return, you receive numismatic exclusivity that cannot be captured by silver weight alone.
Silver – collector's delight with tangible value
For thousands of years, silver has served as coinage metal, trade commodity and status symbol. This tradition lives on in modern silver coins. Unlike paper money, the precious metal holds intrinsic value: it is traded worldwide and in demand across industry, for example in electronics, solar and medical technology. Its limited supply and durability have long made it a valued store of value, which many investors regard as an inflation hedge and as a building block for their crisis protection.
Good to know: Under current German law, profits from the sale of physical silver are tax-free for private individuals if at least one year has passed between purchase and sale.
With this edition, however, the focus is clearly on collecting. Compared to gold, silver is more affordable, meaning limited collector's coins like this one are also accessible to private enthusiasts. Whether as the centrepiece of your own collection or as an heirloom passed down from generation to generation – this half ounce tells a story.
