The anniversary mark
Above the springbok’s back: 10 years of the silver Krugerrand.
The first silver Krugerrand appeared in 2017, for the 50th anniversary of the series. 10 years later it carries a mark of its own above the springbok’s back.

The portrait side
A portrait from 1892: Paul Kruger on the Krugerrand 2027.
Paul Kruger in profile, framed by SUID-AFRIKA and SOUTH AFRICA. The likeness was crafted by the die engraver Otto Schultz, and according to the South African Mint it is struck from the original die of the 1892 Kruger half crown. The name Krugerrand joins Kruger with the rand, South Africa’s currency. The rand also recalls the Witwatersrand, the “ridge of white water”.

The Silver Krugerrand has now existed for ten years. For the South African Mint, this is an occasion celebrated with a very special edition. An anniversary privy mark, a diameter of 89 millimetres, and a total mintage of just 500 pieces make this 10-ounce coin from the 2027 year of issue a rarity among modern silver coins. Anyone collecting the Krugerrand can hardly overlook it.
From Gold Classic to Silver Icon
The story begins in 1967. That year, the golden Krugerrand was released and quickly became the world's most famous bullion coin. Exactly fifty years later, in 2017, the first fine silver edition followed. It adopted the legendary design one-to-one. The collector community was thrilled. Since then, the silver Krugerrand has been a fixed part of the annual programme at the Pretoria mint, ranging from the classic bullion version to limited proof editions.
The small privy mark on this edition commemorates exactly this beginning. It bears the years 2017 and 2027, with a large "10" in the centre. This detail is barely larger than a fingertip. Nevertheless, it turns a classic coin into a one-off anniversary piece that will not be repeated.
A design that has remained unchanged for decades
The obverse shows the profile of Paul Kruger, framed by the inscriptions "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA". The reverse depicts the springbok in full leap across the savannah. This design was originally created by sculptor Coert Steynberg. It is complemented by the minting year 2027 and the inscription "FYNSILWER 10 OZ FINE SILVER R10". Especially in this large format, the details truly stand out: the springbok's fur, Kruger's beard, the grasses in the foreground.
Proof Quality in XXL Format
For Proof quality, polished dies and pre-treated blanks are used, and each piece is struck multiple times. This creates a mirrored background against which the matted design appears almost three-dimensional. At 89 mm in diameter, this contrast is particularly striking. The coin comes in an elegant wooden case and is delivered with a certificate of authenticity, as shown in the product images.

In Comparison: Why This Particular Format?
The 1-ounce silver Krugerrand is available as a bullion coin in large quantities. Even the proof editions with one ounce of silver are usually available in several thousand pieces. In contrast, the mintage of just 500 pieces for this 10-ounce edition is remarkably small. Then there is the presence: the coin is more than twice as wide as its smaller sibling, making it a true showpiece for any display case. One drawback that need not be a drawback at all: due to its large format, the coin requires a bit more space in a safe or safety deposit box. In addition, the delicate proof surface deserves careful handling. It is best to keep the coin in its capsule and only touch it while wearing gloves.
A one-off anniversary privy mark, Proof minting quality, and a strictly limited mintage: these three factors make editions like this one particularly sought after by collectors.
Silver: A Monetary Metal with a Long Tradition
For centuries, silver served as coinage metal and a medium of trade in many cultures, often as a symbol of wealth and prestige. The metal is also used in electronics and medical technology, and global supply is limited. For many, silver is therefore a building block of long-term retirement provision and an asset passed on to the next generation. As a physical precious metal, it is also valued as an inflation hedge and as crisis protection. With the anniversary Krugerrand, however, the clear focus is on rarity, collector's value, and minting craftsmanship. A tax advantage: under current German law, profits from the sale of physical silver are tax-free if the holding period is at least one year.
Conclusion for Collectors
This coin combines South Africa's most famous coin brand with a unique anniversary, a large format, and a limitation to 500 pieces. For Krugerrand collectors, it is a highlight of any series. And anyone looking to give a special silver coin as a gift will find here a piece with genuine potential for value appreciation that impresses even connoisseurs.
