From the rock
We know the megalodon almost only from its teeth.
Its skeleton was made of cartilage, which hardly fossilises. Its teeth reach up to 18 centimetres.
No human has ever seen this animal alive: it died out 3.6 million years ago at the latest, and the human genus has existed for about 2.8 million years.

This edition joins the sought-after gold coins of the successful African Prehistoric Life II series. At its core, you are acquiring physical gold: the value of this coin is based primarily on its fine gold content and moves in line with the gold price. The impressive design is the personal touch, but the substance is minted precious metal – and that is the real reason to buy.
The design: the Megalodon as ruler of the ancient seas
The obverse depicts the Megalodon, the largest predatory fish in Earth's history. With its jaws wide open and its characteristic teeth arranged in multiple rows, it lunges at a whale – the prey already disappearing into its mouth. Finely chiseled shark skin, a carefully rendered underwater setting, and skillfully placed light and shadow edges give the tiny 11 mm surface an astonishing sense of depth. The inscription reads "MEGALODON," its lifespan "10.3–2.6 MIO YEARS BC," and the year of issue 2025. The reverse bears the national coat of arms with a leopard's head, crossed spear, and elephant tusk, surrounded by the legend "RÉPUBLIQUE DÉMOCRATIQUE DU CONGO" together with the motto "JUSTICE – PAIX – TRAVAIL" and the specification "0.5 g Au 999.9."
