The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Aries is the first of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

Some designs need the right stage. Copper is exactly that for this one: warm, glowing red, almost incandescent. The 1 oz Copper Zodiac Aries is a collector's coin in which material and theme form an unusually harmonious combination. Year of issue 2026, condition Proof, mintage: only 1,000 pieces.
The Design: A Leap Through Fire
Aries – Latin for "the ram" – is the first sign of the zodiac and marks a new beginning. The obverse captures exactly this mood. A powerful ram launches into a leap, flames flickering beneath it: a clear reference to the element of fire associated with this sign. The fur, mane, and spiraled horns are engraved down to the finest strand. In the background, a starry sky sparkles. Around the edge reads "ARIES – COURAGE & ENERGY" as well as the series' guiding motto: "The stars point the way, but fate lies in your hands." At the bottom edge, the astrological symbol of Aries is additionally placed within a round cartouche.
Copper and fire – hardly any other coin metal can portray a fire sign as convincingly.
The Reverse: Twelve Signs, Four Elements, One Universe
The reverse is a small masterpiece in its own right and is identical across all issues in the series. Four quadrants depict the classical elements: clouds for air, mountains for earth, waves for water, flames for fire. At the center, sun and moon merge into a double face. The outer ring bears the symbols of all twelve zodiac signs, along with the inscriptions "TWELVE SIGNS – FOUR ELEMENTS – ONE UNIVERSE", "Republic of Liberia", the face value "ONE DOLLAR", and the material designation "1 OZ 999 FINE COPPER".
Only 1,000 Pieces Worldwide
The number speaks for itself. This issue is released in a very low mintage of 1,000 pieces. Anyone who collects series knows the pattern: it's precisely the issues with the smallest mintages that later become hardest to obtain. When a limitation of this magnitude meets a theme as popular as the zodiac signs, genuine collector excitement arises – along with a collector's value that clearly detaches itself from the pure metal value. The appreciation potential of such a rarity on the collector's market is correspondingly high; naturally, a specific price development can never be promised.
Proof: The Premier Class of Minting
Proof (PP) is the most elaborate finishing grade in coinage. The dies are hand-polished, the blanks are fed individually, and each is struck multiple times. The result: mirror-smooth surfaces from which matte-frosted reliefs emerge in striking relief. With copper, this contrast is especially appealing, as the reddish metal refracts light differently than silver. A tip for everyday handling: hold the coin only by the edge or wear gloves. Fingerprints are the greatest enemy of a Proof surface.
Copper Coins: The Approachable Entry Point Into Collecting
Copper holds a very special appeal among collectors. In the USA, countless copper rounds – i.e., copper medallions – have been minted for decades with an enormous variety of designs: animal depictions, historical replicas, fantasy themes, anniversaries. This variety of motifs is hardly matched by any other metal. And because getting started is affordable, copper coins and copper bars are ideal for exploring the feel, weight, and appearance of coinage without any barrier to entry. Most copper buyers are therefore classic collectors who enjoy building their own collection – piece by piece, motif by motif.
Comparison: Copper, Silver, or Gold?
The Zodiac series is issued in several metals. Each variant has its own strengths:
Copper: large 40 mm design format, warm color effect, clear collector focus, most affordable entry point
Silver: higher material value and brighter contrast, but significantly more costly per issue
Gold: maximum material value, though usually in smaller formats with less surface area for detail
Anyone wishing to complete all twelve signs will find the copper variant the most relaxed choice – while still enjoying the full depth of detail of a large round format.
