The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Aquarius is the eleventh of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

Twelve signs, four elements, one universe – this is exactly how the reverse of this coin sums it up. The popular collector's coins with very low mintages category has gained a heavyweight with the "Zodiac" series: each zodiac sign receives its own minting in 999/1,000 fine copper, each strictly limited. Anyone born under the sign of Aquarius – from January 21 to February 19 – will find their personal piece of metal here.
A design with depth: water bearer, stars and four elements
Take a closer look. The musculature of the water bearer, the folds of his robe, the fine engravings on the body of the amphora, the rising air bubbles in the cascading water: this wealth of detail only succeeds when die and blank interact perfectly. At the foot of the depiction sits the astrological glyph symbol of the air sign, the two wavy lines. The reverse divides the surface into four quadrants for air, earth, fire and water, with sun and moon merging into a double face at the center. All twelve zodiac symbols are embossed around the edge, along with the inscriptions "1 oz 999 fine copper", "Republic of Liberia" and "One Dollar".
Copper does not age – it matures. Over the years, each minting develops its own unmistakable patina, becoming a personal companion in the collector's cabinet.
Why Proof quality makes the difference
The Proof grade is the pinnacle of coin production. Multiply polished dies, low striking speed, handling exclusively with gloves – the result is deep black, mirror-like background fields from which the frosted relief stands out in striking contrast. It is precisely this contrast that makes the starry sky behind Aquarius truly sparkle. The reeded edge rounds off the overall appearance.
Copper: the entry-level metal for true collectors
No other coin metal offers such a colorful world of designs. In the USA, a dedicated minting culture has developed around so-called copper rounds, i.e. copper medallions – everything from liberty motifs to animals to astrology is represented. Copper coins and copper bars are therefore the ideal starting point for developing a feel for the tactile quality, weight and appearance of genuine mintings. Most copper buyers are classic collectors who enjoy systematically building their own collection.
Touch and understand: Full ounce, 31.1 g fine weight, 40.00 mm diameter – a format that sits satisfyingly in the hand
Collect with a system: Twelve designs, one series – Aquarius is a building block of a complete collection
Give with meaning: A birthday gift that matches the person perfectly
In comparison: copper, silver, gold
The Zodiac series also exists in silver and gold. The appeal of the copper version lies in its generosity: for a manageable outlay, you receive a full ounce of metal in full design size – a 40 mm round gives the engraving considerably more stage than a small gold minting. Compared to plain copper bars, this rarity scores with artistic design and a clear limitation that bars usually lack. A certificate confirms authenticity and membership in the series.
Collector value arises where supply is scarce and the design is coveted. With a mintage of only 1,000 pieces, this copper coin ranks among the scarcest issues in its category – a piece that should not be missing from an ambitious collection.
