The constellation in the sky
Once the claws of Scorpius.
The Babylonians called this region of the sky ZIB.BA.AN.NA, the balance of heaven. Around 1000 BC the autumnal equinox point lay here, at which day and night are of equal length.
The Greeks saw the claws of Scorpius in this place.

The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Libra is the seventh of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

Some coins simply have to be held in your hand. The collector's coin "Zodiac Sign Libra" is one of them: 40 millimetres of warm copper-red, a relief of almost lavish depth – and a mintage of only 1,000 pieces worldwide. Anyone who collects knows immediately what that number means.
A Design with Weight and History
At the centre of the obverse sits a mighty balance scale, the classic symbol of the air sign. The two richly decorated scale pans hang from delicate chains, each link individually crafted. Behind them opens a starry sky divided into a dark and a light hemisphere – day and night, calm and motion. Along the lower edge, ornamental cloud waves surge forward, with the zodiac symbol of Libra embedded within them. Around the rim one reads "LIBRA", "GRACE & HARMONY", as well as the series' guiding motto: "The stars point the way, but fate lies in your hands."
The reverse is no less opulent. Four quadrants depict the four elements: rising clouds for air, rugged mountain ranges for earth, blazing flames for fire, and crashing waves for water. At the centre, sun and moon merge into a double face. Along the inner rim, all twelve zodiac signs are arranged, together with the inscription "TWELVE SIGNS • FOUR ELEMENTS • ONE UNIVERSE". The face value "ONE DOLLAR", the designation "Republic of Liberia" and "1 OZ 999 FINE COPPER" complete the design.
Proof: The Premier Class of Minting
The Proof quality is the most elaborate finish a mint can deliver. Multiple polishing of the dies, several striking processes per blank, handling exclusively with gloves. The result: mirror-like fields from which the frosted relief truly stands out. With copper, this contrast is particularly striking, as the reddish metal refracts light more warmly than silver. A certificate of authenticity is included.

Why Copper Wins Over Collectors' Hearts
Copper, the "red gold", is the most accessible of all coin metals. In the USA in particular, countless copper rounds – i.e. copper medallions – have been struck for decades with the most varied designs, ranging from historical dollar replicas to modern fantasy motifs. This diversity of designs is unrivalled. Anyone starting out with copper coins or copper bars first develops a feel for the tactile quality, weight and appearance of a minted piece before moving on to larger acquisitions.
The typical copper buyer is therefore a classic collector: someone who enjoys building their own collection, completing series, and comparing designs. Unlike most US rounds, which are issued in the AVDP ounce of 28.35 g, this issue brings a full troy ounce of 31.10 g to the scale – and as a coin with a face value, it carries an official character that a medallion cannot possess.
Whatever is created in small numbers will sooner or later find more interested buyers than there are pieces available. This is precisely the appeal of a very low mintage.
Rarity with Perspective
The limitation to 1,000 pieces worldwide makes this coin a true rarity. Zodiac designs are among the most emotional themes in numismatics – everyone has their own sign, everyone knows their birth month. For those born under Libra (23 September to 22 October), the coin is a gift that needs no explanation. For collectors, it is a building block of a twelve-part series whose completion becomes more demanding with each passing year. This interplay of strict limitation and broad demand underpins the appreciation potential of this issue.
Whether as an entry point into the world of collector's coins, as a thematic addition alongside the silver and gold issues of the same series, or as a personal gift: this copper coin in Proof quality combines the art of minting, astrology and genuine scarcity into a piece that one gladly looks at again and again.
