The path of the sun

Twelve sections of a year.

Sagittarius is the ninth of the twelve sections.

Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.

The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.

Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.

Zodiac sign Sagittarius, in copper.

1 Ounce Copper Zodiac Sign Sagittarius – the centaur with the drawn bow

  • Strictly limited: Very low mintage of only 1,000 pieces worldwide

  • Growth opportunities: Very high appreciation potential due to the strict limitation and the anticipated demand

  • Rarity: An exceptionally rare collector's coin made of 999 copper, one you rarely see twice in the same display case

  • Minting quality: The highest possible minting quality "Proof" (PP) – mirrored fields, frosted reliefs

  • Design: Sagittarius as a centaur with a drawn bow, a starry sky behind him, flames beneath his hooves – accompanied by the inscription "Freedom & Wisdom"

  • Manufacturer: Struck by various mints on behalf of Kettner Edelmetalle

Some designs need no explanation. The archer, half man, half horse, is one of them. Anyone who holds this collector's coin for the first time immediately notices: this is not merely a symbol stamped into metal, but a story told – across 40 millimetres of warm, reddish-gleaming copper.

The design: fire beneath the hooves, stars above the bow

On the obverse, the centaur charges forward, hair streaming in the wind, the bowstring drawn to its limit. Beneath his hooves, stylised flames blaze – a subtle reference to the fact that Sagittarius (Latin: Sagittarius) is one of the three fire signs of the zodiac and is traditionally associated with Jupiter. Above him, a field of stars glitters against a darkened background. Around the edge runs the inscription "Sagittarius – Freedom & Wisdom", complemented by the motto "The stars point the way, yet destiny lies in your hands". Below, set within a small cartouche, sits the astrological symbol of Sagittarius: the upward-pointing arrow.

The reverse: twelve signs, four elements, one universe

The reverse side is a work of art in its own right. Four image fields represent the four elements – clouds for air, a rugged mountain range for earth, crashing waves for water, and flickering flames for fire. At the centre sits a medallion disc featuring a sun and moon face, encircled by the glyphs of all twelve zodiac signs. Alongside this are the inscriptions One Dollar, Republic of Liberia, and 1 oz 999 Fine Copper, as well as the motto "Twelve Signs – Four Elements – One Universe".

Proof quality: the pinnacle of minting technique

This edition is struck in Proof quality – the highest quality level achievable in the art of coin minting. To achieve this, both the die and the blank are extensively polished; the result is mirror-bright fields from which the frosted reliefs stand out in striking relief. With copper, this effect is especially appealing, as the warm metallic tone further intensifies the contrast between high-gloss and frosted surfaces. A practical tip: Proof coins should always be handled without direct contact to keep the delicate mirrored surfaces flawless.

Why copper brings collectors so much joy

Copper coins offer an unrivalled variety of designs. In the United States in particular, the minting of copper rounds – i.e. copper medallions – has developed into its own small art form, ranging from historical liberty motifs to animal depictions and fantasy or mythology series. This makes copper ideal for beginners: copper coins and copper bars allow you to explore at your own pace what an ounce feels like, how light travels across a mirrored surface, and how a relief feels beneath your fingertips. And most copper buyers are exactly that: classic collectors who enjoy building their own collection.

Copper is alive. Over the years it develops its own unique patina – turning every coin into a personal witness to time.

The limitation: what only 1,000 pieces mean

Twelve zodiac signs, twelve distinct designs – and for each design, a mintage of only 1,000 pieces. Compared to standard copper mintages, which often run into five- or six-figure numbers, this is a remarkably tight limitation. Anyone wishing to complete the full series should not wait too long: with such small quantities, timing often determines whether there's a gap left in the collection album. This very scarcity is the driving force behind the appreciation potential of such editions – what is rare is sought after.

Comparison and suitability: copper, silver, gold

The same designs from the Zodiac series are also available in silver and gold. The precious metal versions score points with higher material value, while copper offers a very accessible entry point and a colour effect no other metal can match. Those who see the astrological symbolism as the main appeal will choose copper; those who want to combine material value with design will combine the metals. As a rarity complete with certificate, clear series affiliation, and strong gift appeal – for example, for anyone born between 23 November and 21 December – this copper ounce fulfils both roles: collector's item and eye-catcher.
