The constellation in the sky
A trio of galaxies.
In Leo lies the galaxy M65, about 35 million light years away. It belongs to the Leo Triplet, a group of three galaxies.
In his star catalogue Ptolemy called only a few stars by name. One in Leo he called Basiliskos.

The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Leo is the fifth of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

The lion is a fire sign of the zodiac – confident, warm, commanding. This very intensity is brought to life on a substantial 40-millimeter piece of copper. For anyone born between July 23 and August 23, this is their sign. For collectors, it is even more: a genuine rarity with a clear series logic and a mintage that remains rare at this scale.
The design: "Leo – Strength & Fire"
The obverse shows the king of the animals mid-stride, head raised, tail swinging. Every curl of the mane, every taut sinew, and every flame beneath the paws is rendered with razor-sharp precision. Above the animal, stars sparkle in a darkened field, while below sits the astrological Leo symbol in a small medallion. The inscription "Leo – Strength & Fire" is complemented by the phrase: "The stars point the way, but destiny lies in your hands."
"Twelve Signs – Four Elements – One Universe": the reverse side sums up the idea of the entire series in six words.
On the reverse, sun and moon merge into a single shared face. Four artistic quadrants frame this center: clouds for air, mountain ranges for earth, surging waves for water, and flickering flames for fire. The outer ring bears all twelve zodiac signs, along with the inscriptions "Republic of Liberia", the face value "One Dollar", and "1 oz 999 Fine Copper".
Proof – the finest form of minting artistry
For the Proof quality, highly polished dies and carefully prepared blanks are used, and the coin is struck multiple times. This creates the characteristic contrast: mirror-smooth surfaces against a matte, shimmering relief. With a Proof strike, it's best to handle the coin only by the edge or directly within its protective capsule, so the sensitive surface remains untouched.
Why copper coins are so popular among collectors
Variety of designs: Hardly any other material offers such a colorful, creative range of designs as copper.
Vibrant scene: In the USA, countless copper rounds – essentially copper medallions – are produced, featuring themes ranging from mythology to wildlife.
Ideal entry point: Copper coins and copper bars give newcomers the chance to explore feel, appearance, and minting quality at their own pace.
Genuine collector's joy: Most copper buyers are classic collectors who take pleasure in building their own collection.
Comparison within the Zodiac series
The same visual language also appears in silver and gold – the silver edition with a diamond has a mintage of 5,000 pieces. This copper strike, by contrast, is considerably more limited, with only 1,000 pieces. One advantage of the large 40 mm format: the relief appears more three-dimensional than in smaller editions, and the warm copper tone makes the flames practically glow. Those who collect the series systematically often like to combine the metals – copper as a characterful counterpart to the cool white of silver.
Who this edition is especially worthwhile for
As a gift for those born under Leo, as a starting point for a complete twelve-piece series, or as an eye-catcher in a display case: this strictly limited strike appeals to collectors with an appreciation for symbolism and craftsmanship. The included certificate of authenticity documents the metal, fineness, and small mintage – a detail that, based on experience, builds trust when passed on within the collector community later on. Precious metals have accompanied humanity for millennia as a store of value; copper continues to tell this story in a particularly accessible way.
