The constellation in the sky
The faintest constellation of the zodiac.
Only six of its stars are brighter than the fifth magnitude. At its centre lies the star cluster Praesepe, the Beehive Cluster.
That the Beehive Cluster consists of many faint stars was first recognised by Galileo with the telescope. He made out about 40 stars in it. It stands highest in the spring sky, in March.

The path of the sun
Twelve sections of a year.
Cancer is the fourth of the twelve sections.
Seen from the Earth, the sun travels once around the sky against the stars over the course of a year, along the ecliptic.
The signs divide this path into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees each, counted from the vernal equinox point, the position of the sun at the start of spring. The constellations of the same names differ in size.
Because the Earth’s axis slowly turns like a spinning top, once in about 26,000 years, the vernal equinox point has moved by about 30 degrees since the Greek Hipparchus. Signs and constellations are therefore offset today by about one constellation.
For more than 2,500 years
In cuneiform, in books, on clocks.
- BabylonThe cuneiform series MUL.APIN, preserved in copies from the 7th century BC onwards, names 17 constellations along the ecliptic.
- PtolemyAround AD 150, Ptolemy gathered more than a thousand stars into 48 constellations in the Almagest. At its core, our system today is his.
- Très Riches HeuresIn the book of hours of the Duke of Berry, now in Chantilly, each month’s picture shows the two zodiac signs of the month at the top.
- PragueThe astronomical clock has stood on the Old Town Hall since 1410, today with calendar, zodiac and clock.

Some coins explain themselves the moment you turn them into the light. This is exactly the case with this collector's coin made of pure copper: the very low mintage of only 1,000 pieces worldwide makes it a true rarity within the popular 2026 Zodiac series – all while remaining an accessible entry point for collectors of any budget.
A design full of depth: emotion & protection
Cancer, the fourth sign of the zodiac, stands in astrology for sensitivity, family values and a sense of security. The designers did not merely hint at this symbolically but translated it into a narrative scene: the animal is enthroned, legs spread wide, upon a churning sea, its wave crests chiselled in the finest lines. Every segment of the legs, every tooth of the open claws, every bump of the shell is individually worked out. Above the shell, stars of varying sizes sparkle. Four small dots at the edge allude to the moon – the celestial body traditionally associated with Cancer.
"Cancer • Emotion & Protection • The stars show the way, but fate lies in your hands."
The value side opens up the perspective. Four pictorial fields – clouds, mountains, flames, waves – divide the surface in a cross shape and represent air, earth, fire and water. At the centre, a sun face and a moon face merge into a single medallion. Around the edge runs the inscription "Twelve Signs • Four Elements • One Universe", along with the details Republic of Liberia, "One Dollar" and "1 oz 999 Fine Copper". On the outer ring, all twelve zodiac symbols are lined up – a graphic reminder that twelve designs form a single whole.
Why copper is so popular among collectors
Copper coins and copper rounds have won over a loyal following, and for good reason. In the USA, copper medallions have been minted for years with an almost inexhaustible variety of designs – from historical Liberty depictions to animal and fantasy themes. For anyone wanting to get into numismatics, copper offers the ideal starting point: the feel, weight, edge design and visual impact of a 40 mm coin can all be experienced here without a high barrier to entry. And the warm, reddish-golden shine of 999 fine copper develops a depth in Proof quality that many collectors even prefer over the cooler tone of silver.
Most copper buyers are classic collectors. They enjoy systematically completing series, labelling capsules, and filling albums. The Zodiac series speaks directly to this audience: twelve designs, one shared visual language – and a personal connection, since everyone has their own sign. Cancer appeals to everyone born between 21 June and 22 July, making this coin an evocative birthday gift.

Compared to the silver and gold editions of the series
The Zodiac series is also issued in silver and gold, some with partial gilding or an inset gemstone. These versions are more lavishly finished but considerably higher in price. The copper strike scores with a different argument: it allows collectors to acquire several signs, or even the complete set of twelve, without the collection becoming prohibitively large. Considering that the accompanying silver editions were issued with mintages in the thousands, this mintage figure stands out even more – 1,000 pieces is remarkably low for a series issue.
One drawback should be stated openly: copper naturally has a lower material value than gold or silver. The appeal of this issue therefore lies clearly in the collector's realm – in the design, in the minting quality, and above all in the limitation.
Conclusion: small mintage, big impact
Anyone looking to build a Zodiac collection, or to give a Cancer-born someone a lasting gift, will find in this coin an exceptionally fitting piece. An artistic design, mirror-finished Proof quality, a full ounce of fine copper, and a worldwide mintage of just 1,000 pieces: this combination is a rare find. Anyone wishing to secure one should not wait too long – the 2026 vintage will not be reissued.
