On the 20-franc piece the date stands at the bottom of the value side, on the 10-franc piece in the middle, together with the B for Bern. Which years lie in your box is a matter of chance.

Two layers, two sizes
The wooden case holds two trays of 25 compartments each, one above the other. They hold 25 pieces of 20 francs and 25 of 10 francs, 241.95 g in all, of which 217.76 g is fine gold.

Different years
The Vreneli in a box bear different dates. For the 20-franc piece 29 years from 1897 to 1949 come into question, for the 10-franc piece seven from 1911 to 1922.

L 1935
Dated 1935, struck 1945 to 1947
A good third of all 20-franc pieces bear the date L 1935. These pieces were only struck from 1945 to 1947, from the gold holdings of the National Bank: the holdings were to shrink, and demand for gold coins was high.
On the edge
Stars and reeding on the edge
The edge is struck too: on the 20-franc piece it bears 22 raised stars, in the years 1947 and 1949 the legend AD / LEGEM ANNI / MCMXXXI. The edge of the 10-franc piece is reeded.

Fritz Landry created the model in Neuchâtel; the original dies came from Ernest Paulin Tasset in Paris. The pieces were struck in Bern; the coins of Swissmint bear the B for Bern to this day.
