Royal Mint · Sovereign

A name travels the worldSovereign, various years.

Sovereign, picture side of one year

Since 1871, St George and the dragon have appeared on the Sovereigns of every monarch. Design and portrait follow the year that is delivered.

1489 · Henry VII

A gold coin called Sovereign

In October 1489, Henry VII gave a new gold coin the name Sovereign. It was larger than anything England had issued before.

Under George III, the new Sovereign of 20 shillings replaced the guinea of 21 shillings. Benedetto Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, created St George and the dragon for it; in 1821 George received a sword in place of the broken lance.

1855 to 1923 · Branch mints

The “chief coin of the world”

That is what the Sovereign was called in the 19th century; it was accepted even in Brazil.

The Royal Mint also struck it at branch mints: Sydney from 1855, Melbourne 1872, Perth 1899, Ottawa 1908, Bombay 1918 and Pretoria 1923, almost 500 million pieces in all.

The Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint and the South African Mint descend from these branch mints.

Perth · until 1931 and today

A new St George from Perth

Until 1931, Perth produced 106 million Sovereigns, each with Pistrucci’s St George.

Today the Australian Sovereign of the Perth Mint shows a new design: Jennifer McKenna draws an unclothed rider swinging his sword above the dragon. On the value side is Charles III, after Dan Thorne.

The Royal Mint

A Sovereign from history

According to the Royal Mint, a Sovereign measures 22.05 millimetres, a Half Sovereign 19.30 and a Double Sovereign 28.40.

The Sovereign delivered comes from circulated stock of various years; design and portrait follow the year.

1536 and 1953 · The guardians

From Hampton Court to Westminster

On the bridge that Henry VIII had completed over the moat at Hampton Court in 1536 stood ten heraldic beasts, the King’s Beasts. Following their example, James Woodford created ten beasts in plaster for the coronation on 2 June 1953.

At Kew, copies in Portland stone stand guard outside the Palm House; the plaster figures have belonged to Canada since 1959.

The faces of the Crown

One face, seven decades

Mary Gillick showed Elizabeth II with a laurel wreath instead of a crown, and Jody Clark chose the diadem of her coronation in 2015: the first and the fifth of her portraits on British coins.

On British coins the portrait of Charles III is by Martin Jennings; the King approved it himself. The Queen’s British coins remained valid: some 27 billion were in circulation when the first circulating coins with Charles were struck.
